The closer you are to the hole the shorter the iron you'll be hitting, therefore its more important to have a good short game to take advantage of your extra length advantage. No point in hitting it further and missing greens with a wedge when previously you would comfortably have knocked a smooth 8 iron to 20 feet.
I believe over 65% of golf shots are from within 100 yards. Therefore even more important that your short game improves to take advantage of extra length.
