When taking such relief can you use any club you wish (apart from long putters) or does it have to be with the longest club in your bag ?

Most folk use driver as it gives the biggest relief area , but you can use any club except long putters .

Your right it states the longest club if it’s 43 inches then a club length for that player is 43†.
But it dosnt say you can’t use a shorter club??? If you want to.!

You can use any club (except your putter) but the actual distance is the length of your longest club, even if not used. You don't have actually measure, you may may make a genuine and reasonable effort to get it right.

A club length is defined by the longest club you are carrying excluding your putter. You can measure a relief area with a shorter club if you like -or indeed just by eye - but the club-length remains as defined. In other words a club-length is fixed length for each player for a round, but may obviously vary amongst players.

Its all in the definition of a club length. "The length of the longest club of the 14 (or fewer) clubs the player has during the round (as allowed by Rule 4.1b(1)), other than a putter."
You, therefore, cannot use a shorter club than the longest club in your bag (minus the putter) to measure club lengths. The only time though that you need to measure is if there is any doubt that the club has been dropped and/or come to rest within 2 club lengths. There is no requirement to measure club-lengths, just as there is no requirement to measure time

As said above, a club length is defined as the length of the longest club in your bag and any relief area is already a predetermined size (for you) based on that club. I
f you measure with a shorter club (and you can, simply because nowhere do the rules say you can't) you are not altering the size of the relief area; all you are doing is giving yourself a margin of error for a drop.

Can someone clarify please, is a lateral penalty drop 2 club lengths from the ball position to the reference point, then within a 1 club length semi circle not nearer the hole. making it [a possible ] 3 club length from the original ball position.

That's right, but if you use a shorter club and the ball comes to rest outside he distance you've measured, then you would need to check with the driver that it had indeed come to rest outside of 2 club lengths,

No, the reference point is where the ball last crossed the margin of the penalty area. so the relief area is a semi circle of 2 club lengths from that reference point.

OK but there is no such option as a lateral drop for an unplayable ball. It is simply anywhere within 2 clublengths of the reference point not nearer the hole. ie an arc.

Rule 19-3 says lateral relief, I'm probably getting mixed up with old nearest point of relief rule then 1 or 2 club length , hard to teach a silly old dog new tricks. But I'm trying to keep up
