I only started palyed golf last March and just wanted to share my happiness.

Played this morning, and played nice and easy, steady swinging, instead of my usual agressive swing.

I am off 25, and am hoping this is the startt of getting my handicap right down. After this round I'm confident that I can achieve my target of 15 handicap by the end off summer.

Shot an 89, with 5 pars. 32 putts. 9/13 Fairways, but only 2 GIR. Only hit one bunker, and had 1 penalty.

Now off to gloat at father in laws.

And before anyone says, no shoutrs of bandit. I hate being 25handicap.

Well done Steve.

I am in a similar position to you. I started playing last June but I haven't broke 90 yet. I am playing off around 23 and my best yet is gross 93.

I played Sunday, very steady on the front 9 with a 45 then ended up with two eights and a 6 on the last 3 holes (pars 5, 5 and 4).

I have just made myself a full member at a local course and playing in the morning again with my mate who plays off 6.

A quick question for you, how close had you been to 90 before breaking it?

I usually go round in around 95 - 103. Not broke 100 for last 6 rounds. Last time I broke 100 was 93.

It seems that when I can relax and play easy I seem to do much better, but I just find it difficult to get in the same frame of mind where I am relaxed, but focused.

Like you though its still early doors, and I'm happy with my progress. I'm sure you'll break it soon enough.

Do you find by playing with someone witha much lower handicap you are improving and quicker?

Good stats. Noticed you hit 9 fairways out of 13. It pays to keep the ball on the short stuff. Such an easy game :D

Hope your right about me breaking 90 soon - if not I'm not too fussed as I love everytime I play.

As for playing with better players - I play in a regular 3 ball and the other 2 are both low single figure players with 30 years experience each. One of the 2 has played 50+ rounds with Lee Westwood!

The biggest advantage to me is the extra coaching I get every week. Both lads are absolute Gents with bags of patience - thankfully!

I'm a pretty chilled out type of bloke and their best advice has come about mental strength and how to keep cool at all times!

When I first started I played 10 rounds with another mate who was about the same standard as me but was quite hot-headed. I have made loads more progress just by staying calm, accepting the poor shots and putting them quickly behind me. Whereas a bad shot always led to a bad round before!

What kind of standard of player do you play with?

Well done buddy, feels good doesn't it. I only started playing myself in february and after almost a year of just practicing plus not expecting too much I managed to shoot 90 on both of my first 2 rounds. I then started to look where I could make up shots and try harder to break 90 but my scores went the other way. After a few higher scoring rounds I relaxed again and shot back to back 85's followed by an 89. I only play once or twice a month and have had a couple of rounds in the 90's since, but i'm happy with that.
As you said the key to play to your best is to relax, you know now you can score in the 80's, just try not to think about doing it too much, and hopefully you will be doing it regularly.

Well gloating over. I didn't half relish that.

Wow Link80 had you ever played golf before? You must have got some good practise in or be a natural mate. I practise at the range 4 times a month, then 2 rounds per week. Maybe I should practise more and play less.

Good shooting Steve.

What made you swing easy this time rather than trying to hit it hard?

Do you keep a record of where you missed the 16 greens?

I just thought that all the times I've played every good shot has been relaxed and enjoyable, with little or no effort it seemed. I just tried to recreate that, and took a few practice swings, and then when I hit the balls, just swing through the spot where the balls was and never swung at the ball. It seemed to work. Someone did say to me once that the ball just gets in the way of the swing, it is not invloved in the shot as much as you expect. And I believe now that he was bang on.

I missed most of my greens short or through the back as they were like concrete (still getting used to knowing what to hit when), but I think that may be down to bad club selection as It was pretty cold and with a slight breeze toward me.

No never played before unless knocking balls round your school field as a kid counts. Only ever been to the driving range twice and never had a proper lesson. I've got a few good fields around me so when I decided I wanted to play I got hold of a few clubs and just went out hitting loads of balls. Luckily I know a pro so when I got to a decent enough level he came out with me one day and gave me a few pointers then took me to some practice greens to get some putting practice and just hit loads of approch shots from round the greens. Like most people will tell you getting a good short game is the key to scoring low so it's the main area I practiced. I can be wild of the tee at times and struggle out of bunkers (they didn't have any in the fields), so i've still got things to work on.

grats, it was only a month or 2 back when i started to break 90, first time i did though i fealt kind of bad as a guy in the 4 ball hit 120+ and he was the only one of us with an official handicap.
Dont get me wrong i have had several occasions where i hit a 93-94 but i know its my short game over 18 holes that i dont concentrate hard enough on,my next goal is to hit an 85 ill be very happy when i get there

Well done. I'm sure it is the first of many. Do you keep any sort of record of your rounds. Are you missing the same greens in the same place everytime?

Keep working hard and with a bit of luck and cutting out the errors you'll soon be knocking on the door of a sub 85 round.

well done.

I too just started in March was exstatic when broke 100 for 1st time..best yet is 96 (and I really struggle on the fairways ).I have hit 88 on winter greens/forward tees but I am not counting that as it not proper distances. My 2 targets from March are to get my handicap and try get some low 90's.
