Thinking about playing in the may monthly medal at my new club, which would be my first ever competition, but i'm not sure if i'm quite ready for it yet. I have been playing for just under a year and play to 26 most times, and i feel my potential is much much better than that. I'm just a bit fearful of making an arse of myself if i have a bad day, and i don't really know anyone as i only joined at the end of the last month. What do you guys think?

Go for it.....no point in being a club member if you aren't going to play in medals.

As stated above, we all have to start somewhere so don't worry about it

Get in there. Anybody who tells you they have never made an arse of themself in a comp is a liar and a bad one at that!

You're a 26 handicapper so you can obviously shoot a half decent score at times, it's not like you're a guy who has a 28 handicap because that's the maximum you can have. Get out there, make some friends, play some golf and enjoy yourself. That's what it's all about!

Speaking of medal competitions, got my first one of the year on the 6th May.....I hate medals!

Share your doubts as I have yet to play a medal round - despite being an Assistant Pro according to this forum!!

Absolutely and anyone who plays golf knows that. Golf will make an a*se of all of us now and again (think of Van De Velde, Greg Norman, Rory!) and you are just starting out. It is part of the game and what makes it a test of character as well as skill.

As has has been said on other similar threads as long as you keep your composure and maintain a good attitude if it's all going pear shaped, no one playing with you will mind. Any true golfer always knows that "There but for the grace of God go I".

Joined a club this year and have played in my first ever medals, shot a 103 and 95, meaning I'm now off 17.2..... I didn't play well and did feel some extra pressure.

More importantly though, I enjoyed it. I explained to the other guys that I was new to the medal stuff and they were all very helpful with rules and pointing out useful bits of etiquette.

Sat down and had a beer and a chat with them after the rounds and was made to feel very welcome.

Get yourself involved and let us know how you do !

I shot 103 in my first medal including a 5 putt! It was also my first competiton!

I learnt so much from that experience that when I went out the next two weekends to play in the saturday stablefords I won them both!

Medals are a neccessary evil :)

they show up any weaknesses but also highlight how well your game is moving forwards. Go out, just play as if it was a normal round (easier said than done) and most importantly enjoy it.

1 tip, if you have a bad hole dont try and make up for it on the next, just go back to playing your normal way otherwise you end up with a run of bad holes.

You're implying 103 is bad, but my best score around my course is 101! Haha (should've been a 97ish if i hadn't 9'd the 17th :( )

What's the worst that can happen? 0.1 back, that's all! All golfers can sympathise with a bad round so you won't make a fool of yourself. Get in the mix and enjoy it. Competitive golf is really good fun but just remember it's you against the course, don't fall into the trap of trying to match a 6 handicapper! It only ends in tears, trust me :)
