1st 18 tomoz with new swing and wedges.... oh dear haha

Good luck Gibbo. Depending on which side of Stevenage you are, check out Whitehills in Dane End. There's no joining fee and they've had a number of good deals for new joiners in the last couple of years. It drains pretty well and normally has full tees and greens through the year (though obviously this year has been a bit different).

I would certainly try negotiation on joining fees at Letchworth if there's a few of you. A bit further down the A1, the course at Essenden has been given a bit of a kick start by new owners and has meant that a few of the other local clubs are having to be more 'accomodating' to new members than they were. I recently joined Brickenden (which is a lovely parkland track just south of Hertford, so prob too far for you) which has just dropped joining fees.

Panshanger is good for what it is, but they get a lot of societies and a lot of casual golfers in the summer so rounds can be pretty slow at times. They have invested a bit in the course over the last couple of years, and they have some flexi points-style membership schemes which might suit you depending on what you're after.

Hope the game goes well. The last few days have been beyond perfect for golf in East Herts (I've managed only Weds due to work sadly), so lets hope the Spring weather continues.

Congrate to Tom Lewis (wgc pro), for making the cut in Morocco after a bit of a sweaty 2nd round too....

Brickendon certainly used to be a nice track and a decent members club. Course used to get pretty boggy in winter, not sure if theyve improved the drainage since i lived in that neck of the woods. Enjoy :)

They have really focussed on the drainage over the last few years and as a consequence it's as good as you could hope given the North London Clay that covers must of the land in North London/South Herts. I think they had a few requests for special contributions to fund the work etc etc, so as a new member I almost feel guilty...

Even this winter, which has had a ridiculous amount of rain in East Herts, most of the course has been open most days. Everyone we've met there says how a few years back it would have been shut for 3 months. No buggies and trolleys makes a big difference, but that's the advantage of a members' club.

I'm down for my first medal in a couple of weeks. defending the honour of my brand new 15 cap....

Good Luck tomorrow Steve, dont expect too much, just enjoy being out and playing, the game will come.

WGC is a nice course too, they are also offering no joining fee at the moment.

Have a good game tomorrow, I am hoping to get out soon for my first 18 of the year, Its been crazy I work a four on four off shift pattern and most times I have been off and able to play the weather has been against me.

Good luck tomorrow Gibbo

I have my first round tomorrow in almost 2 months, due to all sorts -been on holiday then got sick with a chest infection. Was due to play after that then put my back out moving a suitcase.

Cant wait to be out, last time I had the full wet gear on so will not know the place tomorrow.

Its a 2 min drive from my house, just enough time to give this a wee blast while I drive to the course :)

well that was a bit pants, driver was ok but quite short which I expected. Copuldnt believe how different it felt being on a tee as opposed to my practice. Had 30 balls on the range and was killing it. On a plus side my irons were spanking and hit quite a few GIR's

The bad was my hybrids (duff and pull city) and short chips. went round in 96 so room for massive improvement.

The best albeit bad in a way, short par 3 110 yards over water wind with so thought gap wedge, topped it into the water, reload and stuck it to 2ft and holed for a bogey.... why couldnt the tee shot be like that. par 4 downhill stuck 3 wood 270 off the tee (bit of wind assistance), wedge pin high then 3 putted haha. 1st hole nailed drive, Iron onto the green then 3 putted (greens were shocking btw).

At least now I now what my bad shots are and have a lesson wednesday so will carry on working on the swing and deffo out today for some chipping practice as my technique evaporated. The wedges were awesome on full and half shots though, I felt really confident over the ball.

damn this game haha

Sounds alright to me Gibbo. For a first round in a while, that's not bad at all (well not by my standards). Short game is bound to be a bit rusty early in the season.

I remember chopping it round in 110 last year having made some changes over the winter and arrived at the club feeling confident! Haha! Silly old game!

The greens really are bad

Not a lot better than temps, played the baroness this morning in a comp. Putting was a lottery

yeah also the walk from the 2nd tee to fairway was rather agricultural, I should have wore wellies :)

wasnt too bad though and a few of the greens were not bad pace wise but soooo bumpy in general

Be careful not to become a driving range pro (Homer II) - range flusher/ course chunker.
