Hi, I currently play with a 3 iron (apex cf16) 18 deg, its part of my iron set (3-AW). I want a lower loft (15 or 16) steel shaft iron, any recommendations?

I just feel a lot more comfy with irons than hybrids or woods. :)

I have a callaway X12 1 iron thats been in my bag since 2016, its perfect for mid height runners. I find it easier to hit than other 1 and 2 irons, it seems more forgiving.

I have a 16 degree driving iron that is quite hard to hit but keeps it really low…I’m not a great wood player and better with irons, and as I got it fitted I’m a better player with it than I ‘should be’ (for my overall golf level) — but it isn’t the easiest club

I was thinking of changing the loft to 18 degrees

I guess a 16 degree is really a 1 iron 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s a Mizuno MP 20 HMB 2 iron

The good shots are really satisfying!!

I have a power spec 17 degree ping i500 3 iron.
It's been a game changer for me on links. Previously my woods would get blown out of the air on windy days.
I can bang this low and keep it out of the wind. Great for 2nd shots on par 5s.
Does the same job for me on par 5s on parkland courses.
Occasionally hit it off the tee too.

Even duff strikes run on and stay in play. With so little loft I do need to be careful not to leave the face open. That's easy enough to do if I'm not careful. Took me a little while to work the club out but now its a very useful club indeed.

In modern parlance a 1 iron has a no 2 on the bottom.

Many years ago I had a one iron (Seve Slazenger blade) and it was used for a lot of tee shots and second shots in to par 5 and long par 4 s. Once you get the confidence with one they are a very handy club to have.

I would wonder how many manufacturers actually bother to make one .

I still have a Tommy Armour 855s (16 deg) 1 iron if you are interested

I have a Ping ISI K 1-iron.
Bought it cheap for laughs.
But it isn't funny. It's the longest standing resident of the naughty bag in the garage.
Replying to myself - what a loser...
It's also possibly the ugliest club in the naughty bag. If anyone is good enough to play a 1-iron, why would they want a full shaft's width of offset?

Having said that, I've just put it in the bag so I can hate myself even more on Sunday.

I hit a 1 iron off the tee a lot in the old days.......
now my 4 iron is really a 2-3 iron with the de-lofting of the new clubs.

I am interested to know why keeping the face NOT open is particularly important with little lofted irons? Is there a difference, is it more important to NOT do this, VS closing it too much?

They're like drivers in that you get little backspin to offset any sidespin that's put on the ball.
Closed or open won't be great.

I don't know the ins and outs of it. Must be something to do with the loft.

I don't recommend having the face too closed either. Neither is good.

When your swinging a 17 degree iron with a long shaft compared to a short shaft say 48 degree wedge. Say its 3 degrees open. With the 17 degree, You are swinging it way faster and the ball is travelling further and further in the wrong direction with increased ball speed and less spin.

I reckon at one time the Ping Eye 2 was the most played 1 iron on the Tour and that has a similar level offset (0.36") so the pros most have known a thing or two.

From 1992 to 2007 I played with Ram Laser Fx Forged 1-SW set.

That's a lot of years hitting a 15°. (WISH)
So I have edited my mistake from yesterday evening when I forgot all about it.
I do regret selling the rest of that set.

I think I will have to put the above 1-iron in the bag on Thursday next week along with a certain 3&5 wood Ping Eye2 so kindly given to me from someone here.
Cobra F Speed driver and some 3-SW set as yet to be decided upon.

Nice. I'll be bringing the Mizuno Pro MS-5 irons and the fugly Ping 1-iron, just in case I haven't humiliated myself sufficiently on Sunday.

If I were you it would have to be those ugly but eye catching BeCu Eye 2 irons in the Orvis bag. 😍

Did exactly that for IanM and GG26 last summer.
Want to do something else this time.

Closest I got was an old ping s59 2 iron, black dot model, extra stiff shaft, I loved it, could’ve buttered your toast with it
