That's fair enough, I was talking from my own perspective and you may be much older than me, I don't know. I certainly would ever pick a new team based on who was successful, I can't understand people who do that. Seems like cheating!
Thing is while it's very difficult to picture choosing a new team, it's also very difficult to picture myself not being interested in football, which would probably be the case if I didn't have a team to follow. Bit of a catch 22.

It was a weird one with Darlo, doing reasonably well, new stadium then they just disappeared without a trace. The stadium is massive as well compared to the crowds you used to get. What was the name of the owner back in the day? Was a local crook so the rumours went.
Not a football fan so would make zero difference to me.
the wife would have a different view in fact this sort of happened to her team in that it didn't close all the Inverness teams merged to make Inverness CT, one lot of fans of which she is one felt her team lost out and was no longer the same, she now supports Rangers who was her 2nd team at the time.

I like the fact that clubs like AFC Wimbledon which basically took everything about the original Wimbledon FC ethos and not the franchise GC from Milton Keynes and went from playing on Wimbledon Common back into the league. They have (and are) rin on a shoestring these days and although it will be hard for Bury (and Bolton if they go) but there is an example of how hard work, and more importantly the right people in place running the club, can make it happen. I look at all the former clubs in the National League and some of those have come through from lower leagues and so even getting to that level would surely be a triumph for Bury at this stage.

I wouldnt support another team - would still follow football and enjoy , possibly look for scores from local teams to the area im in now , i dont think anyone would be able to just change support to a different team unless they just didnt really have much vested interest in the team in the first place.
As for the situations with Bury and Bolton
In regards Bury - i dont know the ins and outs of it and maybe thats part of the problem , Prem fans ( on the whole ) only look at their club and their league and didnt really care about lower leagues. I play golf with Luton fans and they all hate the premiership and what it has done to football in the country - yes we now get some of the best players in the world but at what cost to the lower leagues ? Sanchez for example has hardly played in the last year - in that time he has prob earned twice the amount of money that could help Bury survive ( just guessing at figures here) but all those premiership riches just stay within the premiership , it doesn filter down , these billion pound telly deals dont filter down and some will say "why should they"
The last telly deal for the Premiership for those 20 clubs is £5bn
The last telly deal for the football league for 72 clubs was £580mil
Only have to look at the maths to see how much its imbalanced
Sky have helped create this Premier League Financial Monster and maybe they need to take some responsibilty - last night they had some countdown clock for Bury going out of business !! how crass can they get - they lap up this stuff with faux outrage but maybe its time they looked at themselves and along with the Premier League and see the monster they created and see how much it has affected football outside the Premier League. It cant be good when fans of some teams dont actually want to get promoted to the Prem because of the financial risks it puts on the club
And that leads on to Bolton - are they a victim of their initial success in the Prem , they did great getting to the Prem , built a new stadium , high profile expensive manager and then bringing in high paid players , but then the wages went up and up and even average mainly foriegn players demanding the high wages arrive , team suffer and relegated and because no "parachute" payments the debts from them start mounting because they have premier league standards , facilities and players but dont have the Premier League money to pay for it
Either way im gutted for the fans of both clubs - i have no doubt there is more to it all behind the scenes but no fan should lose their team like that when the sport is awash with billions - the Premier League imo should be doing something to help the EFL but i guess as harsh as it may sound - they prob dont care and i dont even think the Prem care about the fans in the UK - they know its a massive money making machine outside the UK in the Far East , North America etc where they sell the rights for fortunes.

Not sure how much blame you can put at Sky's door and creating a "Premier League Financial Monster" and if they didn't pay for the rights BT or another broadcaster would step in and snap them up and so the money pot would swell regardless. I actually think SSN covered the recent events well and definitely took the fans perspective into account and I didn't see anything overly wrong with a countdown clock. The deadline was well known anyway.

Football clubs know everything is a gamble, sometimes they win big other times they lose heavy.
The question I would ask about Bury and Bolton is were the stadiums full each week, and if not why not?
How many of those game going fans would be happy with mediocrity and just existing over trying to win something knowing that if you don't win something some of your players will leave for a better deal or chance, just as we all do in our everyday normal working life?.
I would also ask if all those non premiership club fans are so hateful of the premiership.....why do they pay Sky subscriptions to watch the Premiership, as lets be honest the amount of lower league footy on Sky can in no way justify the level of monthly outlay required?.
These 2 clubs will resurrect themselves and be reborn, so lets hope the fans attend in greater numbers and the clubs can get back to a decent level befitting their history.

It's interesting but Chelsea have had a couple of instances where they were in quite serious financial difficulties, including just before Abramovich took over............and then we went to the other extreme!!
I really do feel for Bury and Bolton fans. Cannot believe Bolton's demise, especially as it wasn't too long ago that they were in the Premiership and had some excellent players.
Would I support another team should Chelsea ever fold - no; absolutely no chance. Think Murph summed it up perfectly in his post. And also - given that I coach youth football and am chairman of a local club - I doubt very much that I'd take much interest in professional football.

Not football but as a Widnes Vikings Rugby League life time supporter I've seen us go through some pretty bad financial situations, including this season.
Basically some local people and the fans managed to save the club but it's hard to watch.
I could never support another team like I support Widnes but I may follow some smaller team where I felt an affinity, but not really support them to my bones like I do with Widnes.

I get that where you are now it’s easy to talk with a singular passion about ‘your club’ but let’s face it, there wasn’t some divine intervention or weird sorting hat that led to you supporting that club in the first place. There’s no destiny about it that meant you had to support that team. The odd person will have a direct connection like being born in the stands or a descendant founded the club etc but for sure the minority ('because xyz relative did' doesn't really count does it)
If you’re a football fan with a favourite team you can absolutely have the same ‘feelings’ for another team (given the same time commitment)
However if you’re just a fan of a football team and don’t much care for the wider game then yes it’ll be much much tougher just because it’s not the game you love, just a particular team that play(ed) that game

.The new stadium killed them, it was madness. Had they stayed the same size, in the same ground they would likely still be here now. Is the new one still there or has it been levelled yet?
They run out of money today though, the administrator has advised this. Once the money has gone the administrator will walk away and the club will no longer be able to trade, it can't pay anyone for anything, whether players, the police, stewards etc, never mind admin staff. If you can't pay the police or the players you really are stuffed. I would be amazed if they go the whole 14 days in the league if the administrator walks today.

Just watch football on the tv, couldn't pick another side, it just doesn't work like that for me. Got no interest in lower non league football either, might watch a bit down the park but supporting a team would stop as soon as my club ceased to exist.

That stadium wasn't the death of the club it was the owners that killed it off in the end, if only they had just redeveloped Feethams we would have all been happy.
The ground is now owned by a rugby club as they sold there own ground for a fortune and bought the arena and they get 400 for a game of rugby in a 25,000 seater stadium, it was way too big for what we needed.

This is what I was saying. Hard to imagine it for real, but I think I'd be disillusioned for many years, but eventually my love for football as a whole would draw me back to it.

LQ, I'm trying to work out if benefit of the facilities at the stadium outweigh the empty, soulless feeling of playing in a stadium that size with so few people in it? The running costs, business rates of maintaining that stadium must be pretty high as well.
