I recently played with three of my mates at Cowdray Park on a lovely sunny afternoon.
We were in no hurry but are always conscious of other players.
After a while we were caught by a three-ball who were using buggies and we were a four-ball of walkers.
We also noticed some two-balls a little way back.
Having driven on 13th we were aware that they'd almost finished putting out on the previous green so we suggested that they play through when ever they felt ready. They said thanks, but no thanks, as they were in no rush & were enjoying the summer sun. We mentioned that there were some two-balls catching up but they said they'd let them through so that we could do the same when they'd caught us up.
By the time we were finishing there was quite a backlog behind us as the three-ball hadn't let any two-balls through which made us look like the cause of the hold up for everybody when the group behind was the cause as they'd not let anyone through!
What else could/should we have done?

Sped up? :D

In truth, having made the offer and had it declined, you should simply get on ith your game until the 2-ball appears behind you.

Id have left them off anyway..... One other thing thats as bad as slow play is being rushed around the course by a group behind you..... You could have said that ye were taking a break for a few mins while they were playing on.

Problem is that is the main bother with a society/block booking, you become an impassible match and nobody is to blame.

Our rangers had to deal with this occasionally and they would insist the group played through.
Consideration for others etc.

So when everyone is backed up behind your group your blaming the group behind? How much ground had you lost to the group in front?

I was at Gleneagles today (it's been a while since I was last at a European Tour event) ... I forgot how slow they were but gee whiz they love themselves, all dressed up and loving the attention

It's annoying when you look like the cause of slow play when you're not

You can't force people to play through, I think you did all you can

I would have tried to pick up the pace with my own group to put some distance between you

Correct.
We wanted them to play through & even asked them to play through but they didn't want to, and therefore didn't!
The problem, as I see it, was that they didn't let any of the following groups through. If they had done that, we too would have invited them through.
So yes, I blame the three-ball behind us.
