Xbox 360 or Playstation 3

what have their mates got. thats the key thing...

Xbox live is fantastic (thats where you play your mates online.) it is another £40 odd per year to subscribe, with the PS3 that service is not quite as good IMHO, but it is FREE!

It really is swings and roundabouts, i think for your lads, it will come down to what their mates have... its like saying which driver is best, TM or titelist.. opinion!

PS3 is a bit like Titleist and doesnt bring out a new model every 6 months like Taylormade/XBox lol. Like rooter said it all depends on what their friends have. XBOX live is much superior to Playstations online gaming. Second hand game prices I think are slightly lower with XBox due to the volume out there. Ive had my PS3 4 years I think now and had no issues other than the network being down for afew months before where as my brothers XBOX has died twice in that time with the ring of death.

Xbox is notorious for dying, the ps3 is more stable and usually lasts longer than the xbox, they are both super machines but for me the ps3 is the better buy.

The new XBOX 360 has over come the earlier model failures, for a youngster of that age Wii is far more suitable

XBOX 360 is better for COD first person shooter type games online gaming

My son has had Dreamcast, PS2,PS3 (2 OFF ) XBOX 360 is the one he has now and all his mates have as well

Serious gamers = XBOX
Party gamers = Wii
Part time gamers = PS3 ( AND BLU RAY DVD WATCHERS )

Make sure you have a good internet connection in the house as all of the consoles give alot more when connected ( wireless )

PS3 every time for me; but I agree with the general view that it will come down to what the majority of their mates have. Both have their merits but having used both PS3 edges it for me.

So I don't agree with Wolfman though about serious gamers = Xbox. That's a bit like saying that serious drivers = Skoda.

Nothing wrong with Skoda in fact the build quality and reliability is a lot better than Xbox and they're cheaper to run.

If you can get it close enough then connect whichever one you get to one of the Ethernet ports on your broadband router via a Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable. If you are able to do this then that will make a big difference to the online enjoyment and remove quite a bit of the "server lost" frustrations.

Xbox is the better all round system for gaming. It'll stay with them for the next couple of years. Get a kinect as well and they'll love it, wee wees all over the ps move and wii.

Xboxs are for people looking to play games, ps3s are for people who want to watch more blu rays and wii's are being replaced in the next 2 months so why buy old gear?

Serious gamers = PC
Party gamers = Wii
Part time gamers = PS3 ( AND BLU RAY DVD WATCHERS ) and those that want a media server, to watch TV streams etc...

Edited that for you :)

IMHO, the PS3 is unbeatable in terms of games, blueray player, media streaming (it acts as a DLNA client, so if you have a DLNA server somwhere on your network such as a NAS drive or other PC with the appropriate software you can stream all your music, photos, movies etc to your tv wirelessly).

Truth be told, even if it didn't play games I'd still have one to use as a media PC.

To be honest though, the worst thing the PS3 does is actually play games which is mildly ironic for a games console.

As mentioned above its a great media player, cracking blu ray drive but it lags behind the Xbox as far as games go. If anyone is interested I can throw up some links whin shows the comparable performance of big titles across the Xbox vs ps3. Most of the time the ps3 has a decidedly sub par experience (framerates, textures etc).

Sorry dude, Xbox does that too... and you dont need any software or apps either.

Oh did i also mention i can watch Sky TV via my Xbox and also do video calls to my family abroad via the Kinect??

The Xbox Vs PS3 debate will always drag on...

PS3 or Xbox. IMO the graphics are better on the PS3. Was palying FIFA13 on my mates yesterday and the game looks and feels a lot better on my PS3.

Back to your OP. No real answer here. check out what his mates have and get him the same.

>Pricewise there is nothing between them, but after purchasing your Xbox you will need to spend £60 on a wireless adaptor and then £40 every year for the online gaming unlike the PS3 that is wireless ready and online gaming is free.
>The PS3 is undoubtedly wins on build quality. I have taken apart an Xbox controller and it is really cheap and nasty inside. Also the red ring of death that the Xbox suffered with shows how corners have been cut.
>I think that PS3 graphics are better, but that is probably to do with playing it from a Sony Blueray player.
>Do not listen to that old twoddle about serious gamers using an Xbox, like has been said a serious gamer would have a PC.

To be honest I do not care who says which one is best. I threw my 360 away for a PS3. Someone who has aXbox will always say it is better and the PS3 owner will say the same.

I think Callaway drivers are crap and TM are the best, but that is only my preference not a fact. I own a TM as I do not like the look and feel of the Callaway, but it does not mean that they are crap. It is the same with games consoles.

Nice timing, wee fella wants an Xbox 360 but I don't know what model/extras to get as I believe there's different models?

I tried PS3 2years ago and quite disappointed so xbox360 it is just need to choose one that will last a good few years. Ta

Any advice Xbox owners? Which one and what extras and ideally what games suitable for a 6 yr old.

Get the biggest model in terms of hard drive as installing games makes them run smoother (and stops loads of disk noise).

If you have 6 foot of space then Kinect is good, any smaller and it beconmes a bit fiddly.

As for games try the lego series they are decent, would probably avoid Silent Hill or Resident Evil!!!
