Wrong custom fitting?

Would be surprised if it really is the fit to blame. I understand where people are coming from about different swings for different days and I've been C/F'd before and not got on with the clubs (ironically TM R9's). However off 4 I'd have thought the technique was far more honed and it would be more a developing swing fault to blame. If he was unhappy for so long why didn't he go back to the tester earlier?

It can be easy to get a poor fit from reputable places, if the fitter is inexperienced. Unfortunately, I speak from personal experience. My fitter at the time focussed on two aspects of my iron fit - ball speed and launch angle. The new clubs were giving me increased ball speed and a better launch angle compared to my current - great I thought, not knowing too much about FlightScope data. I bought the clubs and suffered as a consequence for a whole year as I lost alot of distance - perhaps my technique had gone and I started to hit at, lost all rhythm and confidence. I started to research about fitting and then it hit me - I was suffering due to ballooning flight. I looked back at the Flightscope stats at that fit, and the spin rate was mega: 7600rpm for a 6i!!! Gah.

Within a month I had a proper Miz National fit and the spin rate was down to 6200. Distance and consistency was back.

I can sympathise with the OP to an extent, but only if the track data wasn't being fully considered at the time.

Just after he got the sticks his wife gave birth so he was never able to get out to play until the last couple of months.

Surely that's his answer?

If he wasn't able to get out to play for a long period of time, he'll be rusty won't he? Perhaps him saying he's not 'getting on with them' is really just meaning he's not actually performing to his normal standards.

That is exactly what I was thinking as I wrote that post however he says they "don't feel right". He's getting the same ball flight as before but has lost a load of distance.

Ive done the Ping custom fitting course and while it is very thorough, you cant really tell if it's their real swing.
The only way to fit properly in my opinion is on the course. That way the fitter is more likely to see the swing the player uses day in day out.
Even at 4 h/cap level, the swing does change day to day which explains why everyone has good and bad days.
Having said all that, the loft and lie won't alter much (if any) so it's just down to the shaft and swing speed.
It sounds as if he's just decided he cant hit them any more and once you have that attitude to a set, you might as well change.

Why change if you can play off 4 with the clubs you have? And if you need new ones for whatever reason, just take your old ones in to a shop and say, "I want the newer version of these clubs please as with these clubs, I can play to 4 handicap".

If it isn't broken, why fix it? Oh no, I forgot, silly me. Custom fitting would give him the extra edge to get down to 2 as it is all about the clubs isn't it!?
