You are going to make good scores both ways so it doesn't really matter.

Some people are missing the point here. It is not about hitting 82 as a specific number, it is about how you hit your shots. Put ego to one side and think of par for your golf rather than a numerical figure.

The point of the thread included a specific number so it won't be ignored

And what does ego have to do with anything ?

No one on here has a pure striking round. We might hit it ok. No one is popping it like a pro.

Maybe the coach and bob but that's it.

I voted pure. I'd love to be able to hit the ball sweetly and on the correct path regularly. I don't have too many issues with the quality o the strike but I can be directionally challenged. Mind you I've had horrendous ball striking days and scrambled my way to a good score, so I guess my honest answer is any way I can shoot as low as I can

Ego comes into where people were answering that they would be appalled to hit 82 however it was done. How dreadful that someone would be pleased to hit an 82. That wasn't the tone of the question. Clearly if you are a good golfer then move the target number around. In fact, ignore the number. I don't believe the question was meant to be taken literally. It is about the joy you get from a score. Would you rather hit a particular score hitting it sweetly or hitting it badly? Take it a step further, do you get more joy from a sweet strike that lands 10ft from the pin or a thin that lands next to the hole. That, I believe, is the theme of the question.

I feel more disappointed after a bad swinging day than after a bad short game day.

I think it feels like there's a lot more to 'fix' if the swing isn't working. I'm sure I would change my mind if I kept having bad short game days though...

AMEN! Someone who understands it. 82 was a figure I plucked (purely because that is what I shot), but I thought the "for example" bit afterwards would get people adjusting the figure appropriately....

Very rare to shoot under handicap without hitting the ball well. my best round of the year was 2 over and I got up and down from everywhere. I didn't thin or fat everything, I just kept missing greens. If someone manages to thin and fat their way under handicap then i'd be very surprised and they would need a Jedi short game or their handicap is too high to begin with.

I felt fantastic walking off as it was a pure mental grind to keep it going.

Pure striking all day long:thup:

Do that and the scores will come, do it not and you'll get a lucky round once in a blue moon.

Quoting Tommy Armour - his two rules (or practical principles) for low scoring are:

1) Play the shot you've got the greatest chance of playing well, and
2) Play the shot that makes the next shot easy

Now see that neither rule mentions distance. His rule 1) is about minimising risk and maximising likelihood of good strike. The good score will follow.

I voted poor. If you score 82 hitting great irons, your clearly having an awful day with the putter and I'd be in the bar afterwards thinking of all the shots I left on the course.

If I hack round, but saving everything with a decent short game I feel miles better about it.

An incorrect conclusion unsubstantiated by the sole evidence being that an 82 was shot (for me playing to my handicap as it happens) and the ball was struck well.
