If they asked me not to then no. I hate looking for golf balls at the best of times and I'm not so desperate to win that I have to go searching against someones will in the clag

You'd be happy to lose a match by being 'nice' to someone because they'd hit a rubbish shot that had got them into trouble - when you yourself might have hit rubbish shots beforehand and they might have fluked winning some holes against you? Nah. Not really me - I don't think anyway. Of course circumstances would determine.

Who said I was being nice? I'm just saving myself from poking round in the rough, I'd rather get on with hitting my shot. Besides, if I can't win a hole when the fella is 3 off the tee then it's my own fault.

its only a game - its out hobby - is any game worth that much to you to go searching for a ball just in case you find it in a bad place so that he has to play it ?

I stress - i'd probably have a look - and probably no more than cursory. If it's a match, it's a match - yes it is our hobby but I'm not into chucking holes away if I don't have to.

Let's say we're talking singles matchplay and we're talking tee shots. If it was a crucial stage of a match I was bothered about winning; his provisional was in great shape - and my tee shot looked like it was in trouble, then sure as blazes I'd have a look for his ball whether he wanted me to or not.

So which is it, sure as blazes or probably???

You said earlier that you would "sure as blazes" look ?

Another one who never read the question correctly. :o

If they said not to bother then of course I wouldn't, but obviously I'd help them look if they wanted to find it.

Only read the title before voting and voted yes all the time. But no, if he didn't want to look, I wouldn't. Wouldn't matter how critical it was in the match....if he said don't look, I'd just have a cursory glance as we walked past approximately where it was.

Aaah...OK - the second statement doesn't state the circumstances - hence the probable. The first statement does state conditions so I can be more definite.

PMSL!!! I hope you look behind you 😂😂😂

And I think we all know it's a 100% deffo in pretty much all circumstances as all desperados would.

And another jumps in prematurely!! If they said no then I wouldn't because it makes you look like a right one! If they wanted help then fine, of course I would, much like I would expect the same in return.

Trouble is, he don't want you to look because he's hit a screamer of a second drive. If he had knobbed it he may well be busting a gut to look for it and begging you to look for it. He's hit a bad first tee shot and looking to gain an advantage with his second tee shot. why?
what if he has a shot on that hole over his opponent. In his eyes he is laughing because his drive is 100 yd further down the fairway. To many scenarios to say nah I would not look for it.
It would not sit right with me within " the spirit of the game" to not look.

Would it not sit right within the spirit of the game to go looking after he has said dont worry about it ?

I'd always look but if they've told me not to, then as a couple of others have said it will be a fairly cursory stroll past rather than a full-on 5 minute hunt. You're probably not gaining a huge amount, are you, they're 3 off the tee already and as it's matchplay, as long as your own ball isn't in the crap then you should have the hole.
