The current World record for most golf holes in 12 hours on foot is 221 held by a Canadian. In September I am attempting to break the record! This is around 3 and half minutes per hole! Raising money for Sparks charity is the incentive.

Sounds like a great cause. Good luck!

How do you train for something like this?

What clubs will you use? Hybrid and a putter?

And finally, where are you doing it?

I am delighted to have support from Fulwell Golf Club near Twickenham, who will set the course at just over 6,000 yards. I am walking, jogging a lot to get as many miles as possible into me and carrying full set golf bag. It is as much determination as anything else. Looking at 4 clubs hybrid, 7 iron, sand wedge and putter. The guy in Canada did it with 7 iron apparently. Will be fun :)

Surely the record attempt will need you to be pretty much running for 12 hours? it seems more about the fitness than the golf side. I can see why the previous chap only used a 7 iron, just one club to carry!

Pretty much, I played Kings Course Gleneagles last year in 1 hour 15 minutes without really trying and that isn't flat and was longer than 6,000 yards. It's a steady jog more about steady pace - marathon not a sprint!

222 holes is approx 12.25 rounds, so I assume 18 holes in just under the hour with no rest, that's tough I wish you well.

Good luck and sounds like a great cause.

If it were me I'd drop the hybrid and putter. I think the danger of hitting the hybrid to too far off course, especially as tiredness sets in, could mean looking for a lot of balls which is going to cost you serious time. I'd probably go 7i and a wedge, and putt with the 7i.

I'm pretty fit, I could probably do a couple of rounds and the 1h per 18 pace, after that I think I'd struggle. So I think fitness and conditioning is going to be vital. Almost marathon type training is what's needed.

Good luck fella!

I think there's a big reason that the Canadian only used a 7i though and if I were you I'd seriously think about following him if you want to have a chance of beating him. 1 club is less weight, less faffing trying to get the club you want, no bag or other clubs to pick up / put down, not having to really think about the shot. Every little thing that can save you fractions of a second per shot could end up being 10 or so minutes at the end.

Do you have to play all 18 holes and if so is there a min course length for the record to be considered? Or could you, for example as I don't know the layout of the course, do loop of say 3 or 4 holes?

I really like the sound of this though, keep us informed, training and how it goes on.

Thank you for the comments and support. It is R&A rules and full rounds, minimum distance to play is 6,000 yards plus so bless Fulwell they will set up bang on 6,001 yards! I hear what you say on the one club theory but how much time saved if straight out of bunker?

Still going through the planning on clubs so all thoughts are welcome :)

Routine is very much marathon mindset - I have sponsors in guise of Royal & Awesome and SSP Golf bars so people will notice me and I'll play straight through plus eat bars on the go for the day!
