There are a lot of players capable of putting together a decent round or string of holes to come out of the pack and win a major but how many of them have the game to win 2,3 or 4? Tiger didn't get to no.1 by just winning majors, he was winning 8 or 9 events in a season and that's why he was so far ahead. Until someone comes along who's game is so far ahead of everyone else's then the no.1 is going to be the most consistent player, they may pick up a major along the way but that won't be the norm IMHO.

Today's youngsters are way too streaky to get ahead but I have a sneaky feeling that Mannersero may be the next one to take the golf world by storm

I've always thought that people tend to put too much weight on the importance of majors. Yes of course it would be nice to have one or more of the trophies sitting on the mantlepiece at some point and it means that your name will go down in golfing history but pretty much anyone in the field can win one if they just happen to hit a hot streak on the right week.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Majors are the golfing equivalent of the FA Cup or League Cup (that one's the USPGA, obviously).

How do you work that USPGA one out?

It is anything but,it has the strongest field of all the majors....the league cup would be the Masters.

I wonder what folk would prefer.....multiple monthly medal wins or a club championship?

Golf as a sport is about the pressure of winning and being able to hole a putt when it really matters and your knees are like jelly - Think McIlroy at Augusta - the pressures and the drama, you don't get that with a ranking placement.

Donald and Westwood are great players but they have not quite done it on the really big stage yet.

Except that every player who has turned up in the Ryder Cup has said that it's the most pressure they've ever felt. The Ryder Cup is way more pressure than a Major as you are representing more than just yourself (unless you're Woods of course...), so given Donald's and Westwood's records in that tournament, that stacks a might higher than a Todd Hamilton Open.

I know it's improved its standing a lot in recent years...but I bet it's still the last one the pros would want to win.
