So here we are in September and despite all his problems and only playing 10 events, Tiger Woods is still number 1.

I seem to have spent most of this year listening to golf presenters telling me that this is the week that Big Phil knocks Tiger off top spot and week after week he fails.

Now don't get me wrong, I like Phil a lot, I like the way he plays and the way he conducts himself and if he got to number 1 I'd be more than happy to see him there.

From what I've seen of Woods' the last couple of weeks he only seems a hot putter away from winning again and when he does, I can see him staying at number 1 for a few years to come.

So my question is, has leftie missed his chance(s)?

Discuss.

Not yet but he'd better do it soon.
Big Phil's not getting any younger and his game may start on the downslide. He's not got much time left if Tiger gets going again.

Leftie seems to miss more putts than he makes, and always seems to be scrambling at the moment. I don't think he's deserved of the No1 spot.

Nice post. I am a Phil fan and site the same reasons as you. I love to see the slow mo footage of him making shots.

I think you make a good point and when you put it like you have, you can really only see Tiger as the world number one that he is, even with this bad form. He dominated so much that he has had time to mess around with a harem of woman crash a mirage and get divorced all with the world watching and still be at the number one spot. Can he get that last few yards and come back to form and retain it?

Well I am a huge Formula One fan and have been a lifetime Michael Schumacher fan (save your boos I have heard and have an excuse for anything he has ever done) Michael dominated the sport and is a seven (count them) times world champion. A few years back Michael retired from the sport. This year he has come back to the track and to say he does not look like the same man would be an understatement (again, I know why and wont bore you with it) It’s not that he has forgotten how to drive or he is too old to have the reactions, it’s that everyone else has moved on in the last few years and Michael has stood still.

Did Tiger stop long enough for Phil and the crew to catch up, long enough to overtake? I am going to have to say no. Tiger is too young and too talented and programmed not to come back and be the best, it’s all he knows, it’s all he was programmed with. Can Phil make it to the number one spot for a while, I sure as hell hope so… I’m going to say yes!

It's a shame Westwood got injured as I feel he'd certainly have got the number 2 spot and who knows. I think a good Ryder Cup would be ideal rehabilitation golfing wise for Woods and can see him coming back fitter and more together with his swing for next season.

I stand to be corrected but isn't the World Rankings worked out by a points scored average in tournaments over the last 12 months. If that is the case then as we approach the first anniversary of the car crash "incident" then Tigers average for this year is going to be pretty poor, someone may yet supplant him. Phil? Stricker? Westy? Might be interesting.

Its calculated over a rolling 2 years and you are deemed to have played a minimum of 40 events. Tiger has 3 more points than Phil but his comp divisor is 40 to Phil's 42. The "incident" should start to kick in next year so Tiger's got some work to do to stay ahead.

Westwood has more points than anyone but has played 49 events so his average is worse.

Phil does not deserve it, if has not bee able to take advantage of the amount of time Tiger has been out of the game and then not playing well when back, he shouldn't be number 1.
