Woods or Hybrids

I'm looking at getting a club between my driver and 23° Hybrid, the pro I use for lesons etc has recommended I go for a 5 wood. This got me thinking why not a 3 wood or a 18° Hybrid?

What club between drivers and irons do people use and why?

I guess that may be a personal thing but just wondered.
 
You need a fast swing speed to get the most out of an 18 degree hybrid.

If you are less than fast, then the 5w is a better bet.

3w are harder to hit consistently off the deck, and for most probably go no further than a 5w, as the contact isn't as good.

4w? Best of both worlds.
 
I tend to go by the loft on a fairway wood rather than it's designated number. Get a loft that works for you and is helpful getting you around your course. By choosing the loft of a club you do that. Even the woods on offer nowadays are stronger lofts that those of twenty years ago. So what says 5 Wood is really around the 18°mark nowadays. It used to be that a 5 Wood was 20°/21° or thereabouts.
 
My swing speed is around the 90 mph mark, I know when i got fitted for my driver I was not fast enough for a stiff shaft.

I guess i'm looking for a club to use of the tees on the dogleg par 4's I currently struggly with (driver too long iron too short) and then to give me a chance off the deck on long par 5's and on the doglegs iff short.

I think the 5 wood was a 18° loft.
 
I have tried so many options to fill this gap but I am now happy with what I have. I use a 15 degree 3 wood, a 19 degree hybrid and a 23 degree hybrid.

I have had many 5 woods but just feel that I am getting more consistancy out of the hybrid. Part of that is due to the fact that the JPX hybrid is so easy to hit (have had lower loft hybrids before and been useless with them).

That is just what I have found. I have a similar swing speed to you.
 
I have a 15 Deg 3 wood, 19Deg 5 wood and a 22 Deg Hybrid. The 5 wood is my go to on the short stuff but if I'm in the rough it's out with the hybrid.

I have had a 19 deg hybrid in the past but I'm just happier with the 5 wood - it's very much each to his own. Distance wise the 5 wood is slightly longer but if you want a more forgiving club then generally the hybrid will be the one to go for.
 
I carry 2 hybrids in the bag, a 4H Callaway with a steel shaft which I hit about 220 and a 3H Taylormade which gives me an extra 10 to 15 yards. I find them a lot more acurate off the tea for tight or shorter par 4's and a lot easier to hit of the deck or out of the rough than a fairway wood

I'm 3 wood 3 hybrid (19') and 4 hybrid (23'). The Hybrids are very versatile and though I swing pretty fast I'm regular shaft. Cobra Baffler rails suits me Sir.
 
Got a 3w and 2h (17*).

I was heading towards the conclusion that I didn't really need a 3w as I hit the 2h so well but thought I'd give a 3w with the same shaft a go.

Not really had enough hits with it on the course to see if it's worth having both.
 
Driver for distance where the fairway isn't too narrow. 3 wood for distance and acuracy on narrow fairways and dog legs where the driver is to long in addition to good lies off the fairway. 5 wood for dog legs off the tee where a 3 is to long or long shots off the fairway, (it's my go to club especially if I duff a drive or I'm in the semi rough).

I have a 7 wood on order for 2 holes on my local course for floating the ball onto the green where my 5 wood is to long and my 4 iron is to short, (I'll have to take my 4 iron out of the bag as I don't need it for long shots or any par 3's).

In you're position you could always go for a 4 wood if you are only looking to add 1 club as it would be an ideal compromise
 
Norfolk, what do you have in the bag at the moment. Personally I'd be looking at a 3 and a 5 wood. I feel the 3 gives me more options off the tee on tight holes or if the driver isn't working and that the 5 wood may suit your swing speed better. If you have 13 clubs and a gap between driver and hybrid what else makes up the numbers?
 
Homer, you are right that I don't have a good mix of clubs prob too many wedges with a PW GW SW 51° and 58° I could easly take the SW out and put an extra wood in, but trying to justify another £130 on another wood, so really just gauging opinon on where to go next, I guess the way I will go in the end will be either 3 Wood and 5 wood or hybrid.

Still very green so at the moment I do like alot of choice with the wedges until I get it right I figure that I can always make up the extra 20 - 30 yards of a 3 or 5 wood / hybrid until I learn my short game much better.
 
My GW is a 46° loft so the 51° sits nicely between that my SW is 55° and my 58° I know this is overkill but the SW may well be the one to go some time

Unusual lofts. Normally Pitching wedges are around 48, gaps are 52 and Sand 56. A 4 deg gap is just about right.
