After some well found advice on Rum, I come seeking further guidance from the Wisdom of the forum. I’ve searched old threads and can’t really find what I’m looking for.

Mrs M has taken a real interest in learning how to play recently after seeing how my daughter enjoyed being out with dad and walking the course with me she really enjoyed being out there. She wants to invest in some clubs however her caveat is she wants to put a set together for under £500 for now, due her restarting IVF next year she doesn’t want an expensive set sitting gathering dust during that process.

Not overly worried about super game improvers as a bit about her sporting background is that’s she’s annoyingly good at most sports she tries, ex National level Slalom Ski racer, current qualified Netball coach and former county player. Her co-ordination is ridiculous and she’s a competitive bugger.

Problem is we can’t really find anything decent in all the usual places for her kind of budget. Golf bidder doesn’t seem to have anything but brand new out of budget clubs, G4C has some potential ones in a Yonex/Mizuno iron set but I’ve never had good experiences using them. GM done an article on Package sets for beginners but most of them aren’t available at moment.

So what I’m asking is does anyone here have any good recommendations, for potential package sets or 2nd hand options that I’m missing as most of what I’m finding on eBay is trash.

Thanks everyone. 👍

I've just bought some wedges for my daughter (12yo) off Ramgolf as she currently has nothing beyond a 9i. Bunkers were a bit challenging :D
Had absolutely zero expectation of quality given it was about £70 for at 52, 56 and 60 - just wanted to get her used to hitting higher loft wedges beforetrying out better stuff.
Actually very pleasantly surprised by what you get for the money.

Maybe try one of their sets? Will leave you with plenty of budget if you want to upgrade certain clubs or add a trolley...

If she is athletic and, above that, strong then consider that ladies clubs might not be suitable.
My Mrs uses 95g stiff steel (Elevate 95 VSS) as she has an “aggressive” tempo and is very strong.

She plays off 2 and whips my sorry ass off the yellows regularly. So just be wary of the “ladies must use ladies gear” myth.

You know what that’s a brand I hadn’t even thought about, a quick view of the GM top 5 package sets for ladies and RAM is recommended. Had a Quick Look on the website could be a good shout as they do a petite set for women 5’3 and under. Mrs M is 5’3 though if you ask be me adds a half inch on that 😂

If the quality is decent might be tempted by that offer as an intro set, she can always upgrade on a year or so once she’s properly playing. Only concern is will they be to light 🤔

This is what is causing me the concerns at moment. She is both athletic and strong, especially in her legs and core. Years of skiing training at that level she’s got hell of a squat and deadlift on her for such a petite lady, it’s given her hell of stability and balance though so think she should be ok at golf ! It’s actually quite funny to watch in the gym when she’s out lifting young lads 😂

This is why I’m struggling to find something that may be suitable but at the moment with other things going on she’s reluctant to spend more than her budget. Though a men’s set at a slightly shorter length as she is only 5’3 may well be worth looking at but we hadn’t considered 🤔.

Possibly consider “men’s” graphite as well. My wife went for a fitting a couple of months back and Recoil 85 stiff came out quite well. But not enough gains overall to make her switch from her MP20s.

I’d probably try and get a sense of her swing speed/tempo before you spunk a wad on anything.

Glad

Glad I posted this thread now as it’s given me food for thought. Going to try and head to range a couple of nights a week for the next 2-3 weeks and get a feel for her using a men’s club and ladies club from the loan clubs and see how it works out for her.

After this evening range session we managed to try varying clubs including ladies and mens. Your suggestion seems to have hit the nail on the head , ladies clubs with a ladies shaft were just far too “whippy”. Men’s standard length were slightly too long to control, but the pro shop had a couple old Callaway X12 irons with a firm graphite shaft that were one inch shorter than standard. Once she tried these she was flying, some really solid contacts, some decent ball flights and a lot of smiles and enjoyment. Even her crap shots which were plenty as to be expected for a complete novice didn’t dampen her enthusiasm.

So now the hunt begins to find a set of a similar style and length, but I’m under orders to do it soon as she wants to get out and play because this evening she has picked a bag and outfits to match it😂

I feel monster is being created though as she’s ridiculously competitive and a total perfectionist when it comes to sports.

Would it be worth sending her for a fitting?
If you tell them your/her budget I’m sure they could find something to fit the bill.
She should then get something at least approaching what suits her best and the fact she has been for a fitting might make her play better just by the fact she has been to an expert so mentally she thinks she has the best tools for the job.
The mind is definitely the most important club in the bag

Would it be worth it ? In my eyes 100%

Will she do it? No not at the moment, we looked at the fitting option briefly yesterday after range session and it doesn’t work out within or close to her budget.

Her budget has probably maximum of £100 wiggle room and doesn’t want me paying towards it for her, due to as mentioned in the OP she wants to give IVF another try and it’s already cost a us pretty penny and she wants all her main focus on that and golf is more of an outlet/respite from those stresses at the moment and if she goes anywhere outside of her budget in her words “she will just feel it’s money she could have used for the one thing she wants more than anything”which as you say the mind being so important her mind is purely focused on that and golf is just a hobby to distract.

Edit: I should add it’s something she’s happy to do in a couple of years once everything is hopefully successful. But for now golf will be a weekly range session and maybe 1-2 rounds a month at a push, which is why she doesn’t see value in it yet though I will try to persuade her.

I'll chirp in.

Firstly best of luck with the IVF. I have one 'miracle' grandchild and he's a favourite (I know we shouldn't have faves!).

The budget restriction won't allow her to enjoy/improve at golf. You'll pay £x to go to the range, £y to play a round, £z to dress appropriately as an ongoing cost. Buy a well suited set of second hand irons and add as you go. A fitting can be had for low cost, sometimes free and that'll dial in the requirements. Then seek that spec. It'll be out there.

Playing golf without the correct equipment isn't enjoyable. In fact it is stressful and not recommended.

Fair enough. Maybe to begin a decent half-set would suit well enough and she could build on it if and when she wants.
If it’s just going to be a hobby and a stress relief then a half set should work well.

I know all of this!!! But she’s a stubborn woman! Her outlook is it’s already cost us around £8k in IVF and we’re looking at similar amount for our 2nd and hopefully this time successful attempt. The money she is spending will come directly from the pot she’s put aside towards it so for her to dip into it more is a huge thing for her. Ultimately at moment golf is going to be a side piece and bit of fun it’s not what’s most important to her.

The outfits and rounds of golf are irrelevant to her budget though. That money will just come out of normal monthly spends £10 on range balls a week isn’t going to impact her savings, clothing wise no drama she has loads already she could wear. A round of golf she knows I’ll always pay as I’ll be playing with her she’s not daft 😂

I’ve got some ideas how I can put some money toward it for her without her complaining just going to take a bit of wearing down and hopefully she’ll relent and let me help even just a little 😂

It also makes birthday and Xmas presents easier for you so it’s win-win.
I got you a weekend for 2 at a nice posh golf resort for Xmas darling 😉.
Oh and a nice pink fluffy head cover. Make sure it’s fluffy though so it won’t hurt when she hits you with it 😂
Kind of my thinking with the presents side of things as usually I have no idea what to buy now at least I have a chance 😂

Oh it won’t be pink and fluffy, she’s already decided it’s has to be a Daphnes Highland cow head cover to go with her obsession of cows 🐮 can’t wait to be hit with fluffy animal head 😂

Thought I’d post this in as an update.

Today I bought a Set of graphite Callaway XR OS irons 5-PW, Ping G20 Driver and 3 wood, Benross 4 & 5 HTX hybrids. They’re all and inch shorter than standard so they’re ideal for Mrs M ladies clubs were little to light as someone in here said they might be. Just need get her a SW and bag (she’s already chosen a bag but it’s so specific it’s out of stock everywhere 😂).

We have blown her budget once it’s all together but after much probing she’s let me cover the rest because after a few range sessions she saw the need for better quality over cheaper starter sets 😁

Gonna change the grips for her as well so I’ll order those tonight and take the clubs with me to work and regrip them in my down time.

She has one of my old putters for now though she’s seen a RIFE one in AG for £80 that she doesn’t know I’ve ordered 😏

Now we just need to get her out on the course in the next couple of weeks. Really nice seeing her have fun again at the range and seeing some similar aged young ladies there last night of a similar standard helped her feel at ease about it and was the tipping point in letting me add money to hers to get her some better gear and has even said she will continue her range sessions when I’m away working during the week✌😁

My wife's bag...

TM M2 driver (men's regular flex but an inch or two shorter) - free thanks to a very generous forumer.
TM Jetspeed 3W & 5W - about £40 for the pair as I recall.
TM RBZ hybrid - £40 eBay.
TM RBZ 7 iron - free from another generous forumer.
Benross PW - £20 eBay
TM RBZ SW - £30 eBay
Odyssey Works #1W - my old one.

Pretty cheap bag all in all! Didn't get it mostly TM on purpose, that's just how it worked out. Plan was to add more clubs in between, but she plays infrequently, still around 38-39 handicap, and her distances aren't really consistent enough to warrant filling the gaps anyway. 75-85 will be a 7 iron, 90 to 100 hybrid, more than that a wood, and so on. I think she's happier not having too much choice on what club to hit anyway.

So it’s your fault it’s now raining 😂.
Nice one mate, keep us informed how she is progressing.
None of us want to hear she beats you off scratch in 3 months 😉
