Ours is a Saturday morning mixed turn up. Pairings are drawn from a hat before going out. Each pair competes in a better-ball stable ford competition off 3/4 handicap. Each person from the winning pair gets 10 pts, 7 pts for the second pair 5 for third, 3 for 4th and 1 for 5th. Small cash prize for 1st and 2nd each week. Even smaller cash prize for a 2 at a nominated hole.
In addition each pair has a head to head with the pair they are playing with. The loser of that tussle pays the (£2) entry fee for the winners that week. This keeps a little bit of spice in the game and keeps any gimmies honest.
Person with the best total of 5 scores (from 10 potential weeks) before Xmas gets a prize, and similarly for the best 5 (from 10) after Xmas . Main prize for the best 10 over the whole winter.
Big dinner and prize giving in mid-March to top it all off.
Apologies for the long detailed post but IMHO the format works really well and many of us actively look forward to the start of winter since the 'Winter 4balls' will be starting again.
Ours is 4BBB, 3/4 handicap , max 18. 7 groups of 6 in which everyone plays everyone. Top 2 go through automatically and the best 2 third placers to leave 16 pairs in a knockout from then on . First three group matches to be played by 1/1/2015 and the final 2 to be played by 28/2/2015. It's a good comp but a pain in the arse getting games organised. My previous club in Essex had set dates for winter league matches and worked much better .
Ours is pretty simple, individual Sunday roll up stableford (Full Handicap) with points awarded to the the top 10 places and a point to all for playing, handicaps are cut more severely and don't go back up. In addition there is a gross & net accumulator (Best 5 scores) and Eclectic comp running.
Ours is a pairs BB stableford off 3/4 - two leagues, best 4 from 5 scores to count and the top 32 pairs qualify for knockouts.
It's full of players who play the minimum number of qualifiers through the season, and generally you need to average 44 points plus over 4 rounds just to qualify for the top 32. Winning scores of 48 points plus are not unusual.
Back in the day, Wimbledon Common ran there's as a league format with the top two from the eight groups going through. Great concept but with only limited tee times available on Sunday mornings when games were stipulated to be played it meant many casual golfers never got a chance to play. I'd like to see the format introduced at Royal Ascot and as we don't have booked tee times I would hope it wouldn't impact the ability of others to play.
