Interesting to hear what all you guys have for winter comp/league formats?

Ours is extremely tired and boring so looking for some fresh ideas.

Also apparently we have been told that even though we play a measured course with an approved SS we still must play them all as non counters.......this news from the Northumberland Golf Union, apparently,is totally at odds with what I was told by Kevin Weir of the SGU who is a CONGU board member....can anyone shed any light on this?I know who I am believing.....

From my reading of the UHS handbook in relation to the rights and responsibilities of Area Authorities, a County Union has no authority to dictate to clubs on the matter of which competitions are qualifiers. It also goes completely against CONGU's exhortation to clubs to have qualifiers as the default position whenever conditions allow.

My place run a tired stableford which no one plays in as its non counting, for some reason its non counting and annoying as we play full course.

We have 18 in our in squad and run an Eclectic and a Stableford £10 entry for both with a first prize of over £100 in each. We started a 3 putt comp with a pound for every one to a max of 3 which goes into xmas night out fund.

We have 8 rounds which goes towards a league then the 16 best teams go forward to matchplay knockout. The formats played are:-betterball stableford, greensomes medal, 3 club, Bogey, Foursomes stableford, Texas Scramble, Combined stableford and Foursomes medal.

No qulaifiers between End of September to beginning of April.

There are three or four scrambles and the like plus the Winter League, which is 4BBB matchplay, starts as a divisisional format and top places then go on to contest knock-out.

Same here! We have a Winter league, fun team comps, turkey trots, foursomes and stable fords. I think they are good fun with less pressure, but still keep your swing in order over the winter.

whilst I agree the sentiment, the County Unions do have sppecific authorities to decide if clubs can play comps as Q - preferred lies in the summer being an example.

I suspect there's more to this than set out; but then again........ :)

Agreed, Duncan, that the Area Authority has to approve qualifiers played under winter rules outside the standard period. I have never, however, heard of one dictating when qualifiers may be played in any other situation. Provided all the rules are followed - normal course length, local rules for embedded balls through the green, etc. - I cannot see how a County Union can over-ride CONGU.

My favourite winter comp is Canadian foursomes. You both tee off, then I hit your ball and you mine. Then between you, you decide which ball to finish the hole with.

Our winter league has 6 teams of 20, with the 7 best stableford scores counting each week to a grand total for each team over 6 weeks.

They also have an individual order of merit for a total of the best 4 cards over that 6 weeks. At least you don't have to turn up every week, although the best attending teams generally seem to win.I'm not sure if it is very original or not.

Our club has a "Wellies" swindle twice a month which is a stableford with some quirky prizes as well as a league table, the club also has seven Winter Bogey comps, culminating in a Bogey final (top 8 - i think, from each qualifier). Inbetween we have texas scrambles, American Foresomes, Canadian Foresomes, Turkey trots and a Yellow ball comp.

All non-qualifying but great fun !!!

its pretty dull at our place, 9 hole sweep, every sat, winter league is played over 9 also and runs for about 8 weeks, teams of 6 or so, randomly selected.
best part of winter golf is the ecclectic that runs til the star of q comps in march apr time.

Ours has 8 leagues of 6 teams playing 4bbb matchplay. The winners and runners up go through to the last 16 where it is a straight knockout through to the final. It is a most keenly contested competition and runs right through the winter in all conditions. Oh, and my partner and I are the current holders after 15 years of trying.

Winter League here is 4BBB 3/4 stableford. However the course has been reduced down to 14 holes due to the terrible weather and lack of sunlight.

However they are going to include Turkey trots, Texas scrambles and Waltzes.

The Christmas comps are good because you just have to finish in the top 20 to win a prize.

Ours is a strange lot .. we play a 13 hole stableford winter comp .. there are singles & this also includes a team event .. top 8 in the team event go into a match play in feb/march .. even tho its the same comp , there is a different sat & sunday course ..(facilitates societies on sat) & tough luck if sat is full greens & theres heavy frost sat night , you are on shorter course but temp greens sunday..

Everyone (most anyhow) see it and take it for what it is , just practice until april ..
