Hi guys, relative newcomer to the game been playing 2 years but feel my game is getting to a fairly decent standard, shot a pb of 76 in November and have been consistently around the low 80's. However today I faced winds like I have never experienced on a golf course before and ended up struggling to a round of 92. Do you find strong winds affect your scores to this extent?

Duh!

What a fantastic way to speak to a new member.......

Tiger Man, i played in strong wind on saturday morning, and struggled massively. I started getting to grips with the wind as the round went on, but still teeing off into the wind destroyed me every time! Also i found putting a big problem, mainly as i couldnt get settled standing over the ball, i tried adopting a wider stance, but still it didnt help that much!

You need to practice the punch shot. Best way to play in wind is under it.

Spend a bit of time at the range and you'll be able to play a bit better. I use the shot even when it's not windy if it's the best shot for the job.

Ye to be fair don't have many shots in my locker other than my normal swing and when I try the punch tend to shank a lot. Thanks for advise need to put some time in to get that variety.

8 of us went out on Saturday and the best score was 27 points and the worst was 18.About 10 balls lost between us.Today wind dropped best score 36 worst 22.Six balls lost all by one player.

Played on Saturday and really struggled in the wind! After 13 holes said to myself I have had enough of this and went in for a brew (scored 15 points and was utter bobbins). It was just not the wind mind, the course was sodden in parts with temp greens that is a nightmare to put on and then the rain came down on the 12th!

Was not a fun time :( My wife played in the ladies comp in the morning and they reduced it to 9 holes only due to the weather . Felt sorry for the match play winter league guys who were still sticking at it :)

It could be worst though I could have been playing in Scotland

I play a lot in the wind and its not an exact science.

Playing this time of year and in summer when its dry and hard is a whole different ball game;)

Main thing is not to worry if you are having to hit a 5 iron to a flag 100 yards away.... even if it means your ave forum distance drops by 100 yards;)

Had a really good day playing in blustery conditions yesterday and was level gross after 13 and pp was only about 2 or 3 over, won our match 5&4.

Just seemed to be one of those days where everything went right, including reading the wind.

Trashes my swing completely. I feel the club wobbling and I have an overwhelming urge to swing harder, idiot. I would rather play in rain then strong winds. I avoid windy days at all costs.

If it's proper windy like over 20mph (a mere whisper for people from up north) then my score starts to suffer but only on the holes where the wind is straight into your face. It defiantly adds 10-15 shots for me as there's a good few holes on our course that always seem to be into the wind. Couple of weeks ago in a medal on a par 4 scored a 9 and it was only 360 yards. I went driver, 200 yards left,3 hybrid out of bounds, dropped a ball and replayed the shot with a 5 iron for safety, draw the ball left into deep rough. Had to run back to original spot think I thinned the 3 hybrid 100 yards but straight then punched 8 iron into green then 2 putted. Next hole down wind birdie. But I love trying keep the ball low with the punchy shots. Defo get that shot in the bag as it also helps with low tree lines.

Short answer, yes. We had a comp on Saturday, best score was only 33 points with most in the 20s. My club clearly has issues with strong winds

Played too Saturday. The wind is tough but it's playing the shots for the conditions. For example into the wind I use a little orange castle tee for my driver and swing easy keeping the spin off and the flight low, where's as wind behind - tee it high and let it fly.

For me the hardest wind to deal with is the cross wind as makes judging how far left or right to aim tough.
But best way to learn is as you did - get out there, not like half of my group who cried off as it was too windy

Ive found that if i tee the ball lower i hit down on the ball more, so generate more spin.

been teeing the ball higher since i got the SLDR and has increased my distance with it, even into the wind. my course is into the wind a lot as its an out and back Links.

I have the same issue if I go after one into the wind. Swinging smooth with a shortened follow through seems to work well for me. Horses for courses and all that I guess

In relation to the OP, scores will be much higher for the vast majority of the field in comps and so it's about playing smarter, especially if you don't play in the wind regularly. Accept some holes will be out of reach, make sure you do whatever you can to keep the ball in play and use your shots wisely
