Windows 10 to 11

I did it on an old Thinkpad X280. I ran the Microsoft check to make sure it was compatible and installed it. It's been fine, and as a casual user, the interface doesn't bother me at all.

Well mines currently FUBAR 2 hrs into the update and it’s locked me out upon reboot telling me I’ve used the wrong password on my Bitlocker which I haven’t because it’s the same one I’ve had in this laptop for 3 years. We’ve had several people have exactly the same issue and ended up being a 2 day install looks like it’s my turn for the same cock up!

My comp is not suitable for Win 11 .

I bought a new lap top. So far very little used . I cannot understand why they wanted to change the 'look and feel', having to spend too much time learning the 'new way'.

So much stuff on the old comp (some of which is only licenced for the old comp) not sure the lappie will become my main comp for quite some time.

I did the same as you, except it was for work and we got another desktop. I'm not really noticing any difference. I've set it up like my last computer and apart from the windows bottom left button leading to a slightly different view, it looks pretty much the same. Maybe I don't do that much on it to notice? Most of my work is cloud based so I go into the Firefox browser and then basically stay there.

I updated my personal Asus Zenbook as soon as Windows 11 became available and it has worked perfectly.

My work Lenovo laptop got the forced update a few months ago and it has been an ongoing saga of almost everything not working properly.

The difference is that I use minimal Microsoft software other than the OS on my own laptop and the work laptop is almost totally reliant on Microsoft rubbish. Ironic.

Chrome based apps = good.
MS apps = unreliable to the point of being virtually unusable.

All our company laptops have updated to Windows 11. As they are naturally obsessed with security, they want to make sure they have the latest version (once our IT people have also checked it through).
They do this also for any Apple or Android devices. If your phone or IPad does not have the latest software, you cannot use it for work purposes. I have a company iPad that I can't receive emails on any more as the iOS is too old.

Well I’ve just got off the phone to our IT support, the issue I’m having with my update is affecting a large number of people and there is a 2 day lead time to resolve it! So a planned 8 hr update is going to take up to 44hrs in total to resolve by the time I get my expected call back leaving me unable to do anything 😒

Thanks all for the info.
A few supplementaries - Does 11 support Lotus Smart Suite (in particular Organiser and Freelance),
FreeCell Pro and
Quicken 98

Just what has win 11 got in it that so many old laptops cannot use it?
It requires a hardware plugin called TPM2.0. Trusted Platform Module, basically a security measure that old hardware doesn’t have.

But it can be added to older machines as it’s hardware based. Modules can cost from about £10 to about £100 depending on the manufacturer. You can get generic ones but they are hit and miss whether they work.

It’s worth noting that many laptops manufactured post 2015 are TPM ready bit it is disabled in the BIOS and needs to be enabled.

Simple enough in the machine that I let upgrade. Keeps general settings the same and the initial set up is pretty much the standard Windows set-up wizard.

I just don’t like the layout and user interface of W11 so haven’t done any other machines yet.
Now I’ve got the Windows button back at bottom left I am much happier.

The most annoying thing for me is that the taskbar can ONLY be positioned horizontally at the bottom of the screen.
After years of having it vertically on the left it's a proper pain in the neck.

Even more reason to kick Windows into the long grass and switch to Linux.

You're even already using the default Linux browser (Firefox) rather than Edge, so there would be next to no culture shock.
(Well, actually, there would be a big culture shock because you'll stop getting bombarded with pushy messages).
