Win or Cut?

Yeh,Have to feel for the guys that come in with gross 68.69,70,s and then get beat by a high h/capper who comes in with some ridiculous nett score, see it so many times...

But all low handicappers will have done that at one time or another on their way down. It's not Banditry, just a good day.
Play your best - see what happens.

if i had to chose between .2 off my HC and a trophy, id chose the .2 every time.

Surely a win in a comp would also equal a cut, because 99% of the time you would have had to play below HC to win.

How about neither , i'm not too fussed about win at all costs (been there and done that) and i'm not interested in a h/c cut. I would just like to play golf and hit it well , close enough to h/c to make it enjoyable would be nice.

Luton Hoo , the pro smacks it round in gross 69 (4 under) for 40 points and a young whippersnapper shoots 43 points off 20. Thats the way it goes.

after 9 successive +0.1s after shooting 68 to win the last medal of the year I've given up trying to win and concentrated on trying to reduce some of the damage I've done this season. first cut on tuesday. 0.3 of the damage redeemed!

You have to go out and shoot your best score your lowest number, you never actually know what is going to win so you cannot go out to win, I have had very good scores and not won and fairly average scores and won, you can only play for your lowest score.

Play to win of course, having fun is just a side thing :D

Yes getting cut is a good thing, it makes winning again feel like a higher achievement.

A cut is only a way of increasing the challenge and getting me back out to do even better and win again.

Play for a good round and a cut.

At my level, I'm competing with myself more than anything. If a win is the outcome of a good round of golf well then that's a bonus.

Always playing for a cut, if I win its a bonus.

Interesting view point, I am the opposite, I play to win and a cut is an added extra!

I aim to score as low as I possibly can on every hole, in the hopes I post the best score of the day.

Going up 0.1 is not the end of the world, it is a reflection of my game and drives me to do better!

This is a very interesting thread, it shows how different people think! Is one way the right way to get better at golf? Does each way have its + and - points?

Does winning to someone mean posting the best score on the day or is "winning" just besting your handicap?

I play for the cut as that is a quantifiable target when I am out on the course. There is no way of telling what a winning score is going to be so I have no idea what to play for. Ok, I aim to beat the rest of my group but as there is normally a few quid on it and bragging rights for the week then that seems fair.

At my course you need to play at least 3-4 shots under your handicap to stand a chance of winning anyway so if I play for the cut I know I am in with a chance anyway.

not on saturday its not!!!!!!

I dont think i can get a cut can I in the format we are in? Maybe I can. Anyways if I can thats what i will be playing for.

The format has been changed to what you said, best 2 on the first 6, best 3 on the next 6 and all our scores on the last 6. Its a total fix for the low handicapers (cough cough the captain/green keeper!)

The last medal I played in, I knew there was a net 59 in before I set foot on the course. Play to win? No chance. Par 72, net 59 is not within my ability.
I play in the vague hope I can knock a bit off my h/cap and make it even more difficult next week.

Idiot.

Oh, and I hit handicap today. Wooooooooo! On a new course too.
