The "Only playing Stableford" thread shows there are some who play purely to win - not necessarily a bad thing - and it got me thinking.

Regardless of format......


Are you the sort that plays to win? All the time...
Or are you happy to play your best and maybe get a cut?
and if you win on the way that's a bonus......

I used to be a Play to Win golfer - these days I'm more interested in getting the handicap a little lower. If I play well and get beaten then that's life...


ps Unless I'm playing Fragger of course, when the "Win at all costs" side comes to the fore...

If I'm playing a friendly(ish) match with a mate then I really want to win, but I would give my left leg for a cut right now!

Definitely play my best - if that wins great, if not, I've done my best.

Anyway, there's enough going on in my head with my own game without having to worry about what everyone else is doing as well.
 
I always play for a cut. As i see it, that is a win. To a certain extent there's little you can do about it win wise as it only takes one golfer in the 20's handicap wise to shoot a decent score and you're out of it.

The only comp i won last year was a Stableford with 45 points. I was regularly in the high 30's and low 40's to start with, after getting my handicap, and even then didn't have a sniff.

So i play to beat myself first and foremost
 
The very odd time i have a had a really low round, someone has always come in with a better one. Last year i had a net 63 in a big comp, and was leader in the clubhouse for all of half an hour until a junior came in with a net 58 ! :(

Wasn't actually that disappointed, just so pleased to have put a good medal round together. My best gross round since 1978 !
 
In a qualifier, being cut is all I care about. In the Saturday roll-up, beating my h'cap is all I care about. If I happen to win on the way then great but the odds are stacked so heavily against me it's not worth worrying about.

Here's my view, and please note that it's so long since I've won anything other than a knockout match outright I may merely have forgotten how good that winning feeling is, but...
I would only ever be trying to play as best as I can in the hope of a cut rather than a win... unless I was good enough to compete off scratch, which I'm not. For me, any win off handicap is slightly diluted because the only reason I've been able to compete is that someone has invented an essential, but ultimately artificial, system that props my game up against players better than me.
Of course, competitive golf without handicaps wouldn't be much fun, but that's just how I view it all...
 
I just play to try and do the best of my current ability, if I was to win it would be a fluke but if I if/when I get a cut I know its down to practice and improvements all round
 
In any other sport I've ever played, I've played to win and in matchplay golf I play to win.

But I don't understand how you can play primarily to win in a h'cap golf comp. In most other sports, the winner is usually the best player/team on the day. In golf, the best player on the day rarely gets a look in. Also, in golf you can't directly influence your opponents so how you can play to win is beyond me.

All you can do is play as well as you can and see what happens.

Agreed, it's always puzzled me how the best golfer on the day can go completely ignored

Monthly medal at W-S-M GC Circa 1997
16 pars and 2 birdies.
Ask me what I won. Go on, someone ask me what my prize was for best gross with a field of 120 golfers.
I'll tell you what I won.............nothing. Not a dickey bird. Zilch.
That was the last medal I played at W-S-M GC :mad: :mad: :mad:

I wasn't best pleased let's put it that way.
The pro was embarassed when he told me the committee decided that to encourage the higher h/caps that all the entry money would go to the net prizes.

Another club I played had the rule that if you wanted to enter the gross comp, you had to pay extra.
There was no "enter the gross or nett" You had to enter the nett and pay again for the gross prize. :mad: :mad: :mad:
