I am playing at Willingdon next Thursday. Has anyone played there? Is it any good??

Thanks,

Snelly

Never played it, but if Alister Mackenzie had a hand in the design, it can't be too bad. Reasonable green fees aswell.

Be keen to hear what you thought of it.

Yes - it was the course he designed immediately after finishing Moortown.

I will post a review next week.

Snelly.

Played it quite a few times Snelly.
It's "ok" but nothing exciting. Couple of decent holes (par 3 5th is a good 'un and a tough(ish) par 5 (12th)) but nothing to write home about.
A lot of the greens are elevated, so the course tends to play longer than it actually reads on the card.
There is a long par 3 on the back 9 (13th) where you must be left off the tee. Anything straight at, or right of the hole will just bound on down a slope and leave you a horrible shot in.
With your length off the tee it shouldn't pose too many difficulties but it's a course that has never done it for me really.
Despite being on downland turf, it doesn't like the wet too much and can get quite claggy off the fairways. Greens are normally cut short and are pretty rapid though, even at this time of year.
As I say, it's an "ok" course, but not one I think you are going to go out of your way to rush back and play again.

they have just hollowed tined the greens but they are not to bad. as usual in this area, the grass is a touch short, but as smiffy said take one more club, most greens are uphill. 6th is tough 12th best hole, 4th and 5th goodish par 3s aand 13th does need lot less club than you think. enjoy
shagster :D

I played Willingdon today but it probably wouldn't be fair to review it as it was so grim weather-wise plus I lost my match on the 18th after trying for the green in one and going OOB! The weather was atrocious and it rained cats and dogs from the first to the last!

Seemed okay. A bit like a few of the other courses in that area. Food wasn't too clever and the staff weren't the prettiest!

Still, it was nice to get out and I would like another game there to see what it is like when you aren't soaked to the skin, pi**ed off and cold!

Cheers,

Snelly
