When National Anthems are sung at the Rugby they are uplifting and all the players actually sing whereas at Football the crowds part in it does not compare to the egg chasers and half the players don't sing??

Personally I belt out Flower of Scotland each and every time I go to watch my country be it sitting in the home or the away end but it doesn't half piss me off when players lack the emotion of their rugby conterparts!

I would have to disagree with the 'only play for themselves' part....if that were true surely every game would end up 14 each?

Overpaid yes but why would this make you not belt out your national anthem with pride?

The current crop of players and those who have pulled on the jersey since the late 90s just aren't in the same class as some of those who went before. There is a "passion" that just doesn't seem to be there now. Even mediocre players seem to think it is their right to wear the jersey.

I remember the days when we used to get the football special that took every single track line between Edinburgh and Hampden. We were herded in like cattle. We went to the game and then fought our way back to the station again for the return journey. You got back at 1am if you were lucky. Maybe we were young and stupid, but it certainly felt different to watching Scotland nowadays.

There is just a general malaise in respect to the whole international scene now I think.

It used to be a big thing. Players were honoured to play for their country. We were patriotic and supported them to the hilt. It was far more passionate then.

Bring back the good old days :D

Undoubtedly the players were more passionate then but they still didn't belt out the national anthem.

But they did play God Save The ****** Queen then. :D :D

Possibly because with rugby the international matches are the focal point of the sport and playing for your country is the ultimate ambition of every player. With football the club is more important to the fans and the players.

Plus there is, in my mind, no other sporting tournament with the passion and national pride of the six nations.

You beat me to it Iaing....luckily I don't recall them ever playing God Save the '''''' Queen,if they had my lips certainly would not have been moving and I wouldn't have been lambasting players for not singing! ;)

My 1st game was Sweden 81 and I hardly missed an midweek match til I stopped travelling late 90's but still enjoy going to the odd game if on a Saturday or indeed away. I would say that the atmosphere aint the same but I put that down to the seating and Hampden being a shitehole of a ground now it is seated bar the main stand but even back in the day the players sisny belt it out like the supporters do or like the egg chasers do!

Football just doesn't compare to other sports when it comes to national pride, wanting to play for your national team for anything other than the inevitable boost in ego/wages and the related freebies that accompany it is sadly the norm these days. I also think that there are too many players playing for Scotland,Ireland,Wales who are not from them countries but their Grandparents were, this dilutes somewhat the pride in playing for the countries they are eligible for. I have to say that if I managed these players I would insist they learned then sang the anthem, if they didn't I would challenge their commitment to playing for the national team.
