Why do we golf?

I have played golf on and off for about 35 years (time spent fishing mainly) and have got to a reasonable standard ( now 8) after studying the golf swing, lessons, practice and playing.
I have shot a few sub par rounds and got down to 5 and yet in all that time I have never been asked why do I do golf, and do you know what? I don’t know so sod this for a lark, I’m off fishing, see ya!
Ask a silly question and all that.

Don't you just love this type of deep amd meaningful philosophical posts. Its a simple game really, but it has such a hold over us doesn't it.

The statement, in the OP, about not being able to play golf again is one that we'll all have to deal with at some time or other. I have been there already. When you look at it rationally, it's a stupid selfish thought process really, but at the time that it occupies your mind, it is really important. Fortunately I got over the health problems and the golf hasn't been affected. Looking back now, there were far more important issues to deal with, but my defence mechanism kicked in and I didn't want to think about them, all I was worried about was my golf.

Why did I think that way, I have no idea really. I just did.

It's a game that has us wound round it's little finger. It plays with us, toys with us, builds us up and then knocks us down. It's a fickle, wonderfull game and I wouldn't have it any other way.

 :)

Some excellent posts on this subject. I played cricket to a reasonable club 1st team standard for 25 years, and the spirit and particularly the banter was great. I gave up the game at the age of 35 when I became disillusioned with the way the game was going (sledging..etc), and it also coincided with the arrival of the kids. So I took up golf, and have never looked back since. Yes, I miss the team banter, but you can still get many laughs out of a round of golf, and as much banter as you want to put in. However, the levels of sportsmanship, passion, intensity and commitment in golf are unsurpassed. I wish I had taken up the game a lot earlier. And, to coin an old phrase, "you can play golf until they put you in a box." That'll do me.

I don't think it's a silly question at all.

For me it's knowing that one day, (hopefully this year), I will shoot a 3 or 4 under par round, yet still come off disappointed because in that round, there will still be missed opportunities, and I'll say " what could have been". :o :D

I love learning something new about myself and my game every single time I go out there.

Golf is a drug but infinitely more addictive.
