I've got a landmark birthday (40) coming up later this year and am trying to decide how to treat myself to mark the occasion.

Option 1 - Go for the full custom fit experience to get myself a new set of irons. (I've never owned a brand new set of clubs. Got fitted for a driver a couple of years ago but have always had second hand irons)

Option 2 - Put together a list of 3 or 4 of the best courses in the UK and go and play them all over the course of a week)

Background info - I play off 18 and due to work and family I only get to play 18/20 times a year so I'm never going to play to single figures. I was at uni at St Andrews so have played all the courses there and would be looking at other top courses I haven't played before.

So if you were in my position which would you choose? And if you chose something else what would it be?

Must not be much of a family work commitment if you can play 18/20 times a day! Must be speed golf ;)

Who would you play the courses with and are you happy enough with your current clubs.

No point in playing the top courses if you are unhappy with your set-up.

A weekend away at a top club playing golf and include a club fitting , buy a set if you must , you may then play more too , The Belfry , or a weekend in Bournemouth playing Parkstone , Broadstone and Remedy Oak , if in the summer then the family can enjoy the beach while you play ................................ EYG

In your position I would defiantly go for option two, no guarantee custom fit would be best for you,but if you played some of the best courses even if you didn't play to your best you should enjoy the experience .

if it was only 18-20 times a year then a top top course. You can always get a cheap set of irons off ebay.

Option 2. As you have already played the courses around St Andrews, I would head to Southport. Birkdale, Hillside, Formby and Southport & Ainsdale wouldn't be a bad trip. You could also go to Blackpool and not act your age.;)

There's something in me saying option 1, because a set of clubs will last a lot longer than a week's golf, even if it is at top venues.

However, if I was in your shoes, I think I'd go for option 2, unless you think there's a chance that you'll play more in the next few years...?

I am hitting the 40 landmark too.. And am looking at the 2 options myself!!!!

May be all the 40ers get together and have a forum game??

Have a fitting and get the club specs, then get them second hand. You should still have change for a couple of decent courses.

I'm turning 40 in September, and looking at new bats, but after this perhaps I should be playing nice courses instead?

I was going bats as the kids will grow up and that will give me more time to use the clubs, on nice courses

Option 2. It's my 40th next year and that's what I'll be doing. The plan, if money permits, is to go to California and have a knock round some place called Pebble Beach. If not, I'll happily take a couple of days off to play The Berkshire and Sunningdale, we'll see.
