Depends on your budget and what feels good really.
My advice would be to go somewhere that has a wide stock like American Golf and try as many sets as you can (beware though AG will push Wilson, Yonex, Hogan and Nicklaus to newbies as they are the brands with the biggest mark up). Try and go with an open mind and not get coerced into a make your not happy with when you hit them.
Of the two makes you mentioned I'd go with MD as they will probably be cheaper (depending on which model you choose) but again its how they feel when you swing them and what they look like to you sat behind the ball
I know I keep banging on about this when people ask about their first sets but..Why buy an inferior new set when you could get a really good set of irons off the second hand shelf. Buying second hand is not second best, golf clubs are built to last and many golfers are willing to trade their sets back in after a few rounds of golf. Why not do a bit of research or ask on the forum then try and find a second hand bargain. It will save you money and put better kit into your bag. Apart from my driver (which I got a bargain on) all of my kit is second hand. bloody good stuff it is too.
Hi Conor, dont forget ebay! A lot of the good ebay shops are club professionals selling last seasons clubs, and many welcome direct communication.I got my cleveland CG reds 4-PW for £199 brand new! Its the best way to get new stock for really good prices.MD Golf stuff is very cheap on there too.
I'm with Drawboy on this one. Pound for pound you will get a better deal with a decent set of second hand irons and they will last you years. If you buy the cheap new set you will be swapping them within a year if you get into the game properly.
Don't forget also a lot of larger retailers are now looking to shift any remaining 2008 and a lot of 2009 stock in time for all the new releases. Titleist, TM, Ping, Mizuno, Nike etc have all announced and in some cases released their new models and so there needs to be space made to carry these newer clubs. A lot of the online stores must be doing some decent deals now so you could get a very good and brand new set cheaper than you thought
Hi, i have actually got the Wilson set but have upgraded the bag and the putter since. The irons are good but slightly heavy in my opinion. The driver is excellent as is the 3 wood although i do struggle with the hybrids but maybe thats just me. The putter was far too light for me although my mate who is using it at the moment really gets along with it. The bag is great and the only reason i upgraded was that i wanted a cart bag to go on my powercaddy. Overall i would recommend this set if you are new to golf, i have hit a best ever round of 84 (par 70 course) using the irons and woods off a 20 HC so they can`t be that bad. I will be continuing to use the irons and Driver next season until my HC comes down to around 17 then i will be changing. I picked my set up from a local driving range for £175 plus it gave me the advantage of trying a few irons beforehand. Hope this helps a little.
