Which era would you have liked to be a tour pro?

Following on from the thread on which pro you are like, I was thinking about WHEN I would have liked to play as a pro.

I'm taking money out of it as a factor, as you'd obviously make a shedload more today.

So my choices would be influenced by a variety of factors: who else was playing then, classic tournaments and courses on offer, fashions at the time, types of clubs available etc.

It would be early 1980s Eurpean Tour for me: Farah slacks, Pringle, plenty of classic British courses still on the rota and the emergence of the European Tour greats like Seve, Langer, Faldo etc to compete against.

I know this topic is relevant to nothing, but it's Friday and I'm bored at work.

You get to see the likes of Hogan and Snead in thier prime as well as a few whippersnappers called Palmer, Nicklaus and Player coming on the scene. Peter Thomson, Henry Cotton and Bobby Locke might also be worth a look as well when you come over to Britain for the Open.

Elvis is about to break through, Marilyn Monroe is kicking about with other proper Hollywood icons and the Ratpack are in full swing, you just couldnt beat it.

BUT Mr Lobbie, you cannot get into the clubhouse as you are staff!!

You are called by your surname only but have to use MR to all other male golfers as they are members and you are NOT!

I totally understand the money point about the modern game, but...

...If you took money out of it, would you still go for the present day? There are some very good players, and lots of different winners on tour, but I don't see many players with the charisma and talent to become legends (Tiger excepted, but for talent not charisma, clearly).

Will this present time be regarded as a golden era like the US in the 60s or Europe in the 80s? Not sure.
