Hey, I've been thinking of joining a club for ages and keep putting it off but my new year's resolution was to join so I can't back out now! I live in Leyland (Preston) and was just wondering if anyone on here have any recommendations to make?

Now I've played at Leyland and boring is probably the easiest word to describe the course. So it will either be in the Chorley or Preston area I will be looking at. Shame really as Leyland is only 2 minute away!

Have you tried Penwortham? I've played there a few times with a mate who's a member and I like it. He used to be at Ingol, also a nice layout, but its very boggy in the winter - lost a few balls in the middle of the fairways!!

Shaw Hill is not too far away, nor is Penwortham or Preston Golf Club. Duxbury is in Chorley but is not too great. Gathurst is in Appley Bridge, just north of Wigan. Charnock Richard is OK-ish.. My choice would be Shaw Hill, but i'm a member at Gathurst as its literally on my doorstep..

Hi Dean, I'm a member at Penwortham and would thoroughly recommend it. Lovely course that is always well maintained and has has many £K's spent on it over the past 6/7 years. Great set of members, super pro and assistants and 1 or 2 comps every week between April and October.
I think there is an open day one Sunday at the end of Jan where you can play 9 for free, meet the pros and get a good deal on membership.

Is Lancashire golf club too far away for you? A mate used to be a member, I've played it about 6 times, it is a cracking course.

Yeh, bit far away for me pal!

Not played at Penwortham but heard good reviews.

I have played the course at PGC a few times and I get my lessons there. If I lived a little closer to it I wouldn't think twice, the facilities are second to none.

What are the facilities like at Shaw Hill? Is there a practice ground? I've heard off an ex-member there that Shaw Hill focus more on the Hotel side and the course gets neglected. Shame really as it's probably the 2nd closest club to me!

I would agree with the rating of "Ok-ish" at Charnock Richard to say the least.

I'm only 21 so I'm eligible for a good rate there to start with! Do they have a practice ground? Why is it that club websites never tell you what practice facilities they have?

Garstang is a nice gc, not actually sure they do membership. Good driving range though!

Again bit far pal but thanks.

Dean, Penwortham only has a smallish practice ground where 6/7 iron is about the biggest club you can use. It is best used as a short game practice area with green and bunker. The pros use the driving range at Whitestake as their teaching base.

The greens at Chorley have not been very good over the last couple of years and a few scratch players left last year to come to Old links and I understand that a few more have left this year and come to join us.

Chorley have just suspended their joining fee to try and attract new members. I work with a cat 1 player who has played there for a long time and he says the greens are getting worse year by year and nothing really seams to be being done about it. Its a real shame because I can remember it being a really good course when I first started playing.
