Which area next?

I was at the driving range last night and I was finally starting to hit my irons quite well (for me anyway) and realised that this area of my game is now easily twice as good as everything else. So I was wondering which part of my game to work on next? - either the Woods or Pitching and Chipping.

I know the short game is important but, I seriously lack any kind of really distance. I slice my woods so badly it makes them redundant. Whereas my pitching and chipping isn’t great but I can at least get the ball going in the generally the right area.

In order to score you need to have a good short game but by your own admission your not getting the ball up there quickly enough so I would suggest you work on the woods and building confidence with them. Try slowing your swing down to a tempo you can replicate.

Cheers looks lile a lesson on using the woods is in order. Tempo was one of the things I worked on for my irons so I'll try and replicate that with the woods.

I agree. You need to get into range before you can let the short game work. Concentrate on getting it into play regularly off the tee, use the improvements in your iron play get you to the fringes and when that is working better focus on the short game

iGolf, sorry if I'm not understanding correctly, but are you going out and playing? Are you then choosing to practice just one thing at a time at the range?

If you can hit your irons reasonably well, why not gradually introduce the next clubs up in your set. You must have some rescue/hybrid clubs (given your set), so learn to hit one of them and go and enjoy playing. The short game will come, but firstly you need to getting around the course with a usable long-game.

If you are using the help of a pro or other such person, then I say get your long game fixed.

If you are working by yourself, then work on your short game.

Cheers guys for backing up what I was thinking, the long game needs a bit of work next.

I do have a hybrid and it's what I've been using off the tee instead of the driver/3 wood. I'm ok with it but do need more pracitce with it. The only reason I've been focusing on my irons is because that's what my last lesson covered and I wanted to really work on the things my pro suggested.

So my next step I think will be to ask my pro to do a lesson on driving. I can then go away and work on that while also continuing to work on irons/hybrid.

The short game can wait for now, but I've got a long road ahead and it's time will come.

OK...but maybe hold on a little. Is your golf pro teaching you how to swing a club or how to get round the course with different clubs? I didn't specifically ask my pro to watch me hit 3 woods or drivers until I was already playing well under 85. If he wants to do lessons with a mid iron and teach you how to build a swing, maybe not rush into drivers!
If he's teaching you to swing, practice that and experiment yourself with a hybrid or 5 wood as your new "tee" club.

I've only just moved to wimbledon (been there less than 2 weeks) so havent played anywhere yet. I've seen you mention Wimbledon common before Homer so I think I'll give there a try.

Maybe I am rushing into trying to drive the ball. Im just so keen to get better that I want to try and improve eveything. I might need to rein myself in.

Wimbledon Common is a decent enough test to be starting with and there are two courses at Richmond. As you are only down the road why not get down to Royal Ascot on June 9th and meet some of the other forum members. Its about having a laugh (especially the way I'm playing) and the scores are secondary. PM me or check out the threads in arrange a game

I would love to but I have my final accountancy exam on June 10th. And as much I as love golf and hate studying I think I'll have to give this one a miss. Hopefully next time!

I hoping once the studing is out of the way I can practice/play more than once a week and I'll start making some real progress.
