Which Anti Virus?

AVG free.

Been using it for over 7 years and never had a problem. On a few occasions it was alerted me of a threat, you click fix and it sorts out for you.

With a bit of effort and good housekeeping AVG free and a couple of other programs can keep you safe.

In the end nothing beats getting yourself behind a bit of hardware like a router and then employing safe browsing habits on top of a bit of software protection.

How do you know if a free (or indeed any) AV software is any good, as any decent virus or malware that gets past your defences will not be reported or then show itself that readily, and will work it's malevolent way behind the scenes without you realising it?

See post 19.

Basically, if I don't notice it, I don't care. That's a pragmatic approach rather than an inconsiderate one. I'm pretty certain that there are sleeper threats lurking in cyberspace, but I rely on the detection community who, in spite of competing, share pretty much all of their threat discoveries.

Personally I agree with Foxholer if I don't know, I don't worry else we would never use the devices. With my on line banking I rightly or wrongly rely on the banks security (so long as I have my own security in place also) as i am just not that bright on these things. I mainly rely on my own security for browsing, e mails etc and as after paying I think £40 for Norton and getting in a mess twice I was quite determined Norton was going. I have backed up the recommendations off here with a bit of research myself on line and both free versions of Avast and AVG are highly recommended...
