Where has my distance gone ?

LOST: distance with my new mp 32's if found then please pm me. Reward given

So I have played a couple of rounds with the mp32's and they are great. Lovely ball flight, lovely feel and lovely sound BUT I'm hit the ball about 10-15 yards less than I was with the yonex nanospeed I. I know they had regular graphite shafts but would it really make that much of a difference ?

Example; old 8 iron =155 yards
New 8iron= 140 yards

It doesn't feel like I'm doing anything different and in fact I feel more in tempo at the moment.

Just a quick google. Nanospeed 8i 35* loft, Mp32 8i 39*. Basically your 8i is now a proper 8i. If this is the case your 7i should now go about 150-155.

150 with a 7 iron thats short in these parts isn't it?


seems like youve been a victim of ever decreasing lofts on irons and what was your 8 iron actual had a standard 7 iron loft. Hence no actual distance lost you just need to club up

I was exactly the same, and then did some research and found my new wilson v2's were much weaker in lofts, with a five degree difference in comparison to my previous set. Also, you'll find forged clubs are more consistent in its distance control. My previous cavity backs had such a springy face that sometimes an 8 iron would go 150, and others 165. I'm much happier with having to hit an 8 iron only 135 but know its going to be 135 and nothing else. It is difficult to get club selection correct to start with though. A nine iron before is now an eight iron, and if you forget the difference like I did, you'll find yourself chipping from the front of 18 greens in a row!! All is good now I'm no longer a numpty.

My mp57s are the same.

8 iron = 140 yards, 130 on a toe hit

7 = 150

6 = 160

5 = 170

4 = 180

3 = 190

Simple really but take SyR, nice big low lofted GI irons an a 7 iron goes 170 yards!

I am jealous of his distance but it did not help him win the 4BBB

For me I've actually gained distance since moving from my R7's to my MP32's.

The reason I gained distance, I'm sure is down to the shaft as I'm getting a much more penetrating flight.

While the R7 lofts were stronger, as an example the R7 6 iron was 28* compared to 31* in the 32's, I felt the shaft didn't do me any favors as it was only a 90g shaft that had a tendency to launch pretty high.

Our 4th is a par 3 at 157 yards, plays slightly up hill. I used to hit a smooth 6 iron or a firm 7 to get to land short and run on, now I hit a smooth 6 and I carry it onto the green.

As has been said, it will be down to the loft and (less significantly) the fact you're playing with forged clubs which are made of softer metal. Don't let it worry you. 140 yards for an 8 iron is fine since you're not playing on tour.

I was just thinking that myself. Still guess they go straight, if nowt else.

I think you are always going to lose a bit of distance with forged clubs against cast cavity backs.

8 iron 140 is not bad further than i hit mine.

Sorry, I can't agree with this statement at all.
We read about the "buttery soft feel" of forged clubs and tend to forget that they are still made of steel and thus, are hard. Very very hard when taken in relation with the millions of times softer golf ball
Any differences in distance are down to different lofts, shafts and clubhead design.

You are probably very right. I know little about golf club design and was going on info I had previously been told.
