Hi all

Am due to move in a couple of weeks. The only furniture that we need is a new wardrobe(s) for me and the Mrs. Only problem is that loads of it is mega expensive.....or if its a bit more reasonably priced it gets rinsed on the reviews about quality etc

Now, I (and the Mrs) really like this one:

http://www.dunelm.com/product/colburn-cream-triple-wardrobe-1000095150

£240 per wardrobe.....so £500 for the both of us, perfect. Except its reviews are awful.

where do you buy yours from? I'm rubbish at DIY and anything with an idiots guide is appreciated.

Quality antique brown furniture is as cheap as chips atm. and will outlast by miles the cheap rubbish that Ikea/Dunelm/Oakland churn out.
I have a some nice old stuff, dining table/chairs, desk and sideboard which would cost a fortune if they were made new.

Bedrooms, maybees think about employing a joiner to get ready fitted.
We did that recently to two bedrooms and it looks superb.
+ forgot the lovely Penbroke table I am sitting at now.

Get yourself down to the auction rooms or antiques shops (not specialists), there awash with brown furniture they can't shift and its all solid quality wood.

You'll pick it up cheap and then spend half what you would have on naff MDF or chipboard to have it rubbed down and varnished/treated.

It will outlive you.

Don't forget that quality furniture, well looked after, will also hold it's value.
Ercol is currently trendy so could be an investment.

I always laugh at the old money Toffs put down that Michael Hesaltine had to endure.

Really don't get buying old [antique] stuff unless, of course, you like the look of old [dark] furniture..

I'd sooner buy on the basis I like the look of something rather than it'll outlive me or grow in value...

Anyway, latest 'stuff' we got was from IKEA...
Cheap as chips and it will outlast me..

We are getting BHF along next Monday to my mum's house to decide which furniture they would like to take. The BHF store in Stockwell Street, Glasgow will have some nice pieces in the not too distant future.

Bought a wardrobe, chest of drawers, 2 bedside cabinets, tv unit and bookcase from Chiltern Oak last month. All solid units, no assembly required, very good quality and reasonable prices. Have a look at them.

It really depends on what you want, layout of room and budget.

I had wardrobes either side of the chimney breast but we needed more space so I had sliding ones fitted and shelving.

We’ve some other furniture from John Lewis that I’d recommend but it was pricey.

Hope this helps.

Yours Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen.

Just moved house and we got Pax wardrobes from Ikea. You buy the carcass and then chose the doors and the interior (rails, drawers, shelves, etc) to set it up how you want. Good value, easy to put together and you get exactly the layout you want. The online design tool helps a lot as it stops you picking a layout that won’t fit as it won’t let you put things where they won’t go

Spent an age last night looking around for the right kind of thing and I've found one. It's a bit more expensive than I'd ideally have liked but it fits the bill in terms of size, space, look etc and they offer a service where they'll build it for you.

Now just a bit of time to mull it over and make sure we're happy with it before we dive in. £619 to deliver and build it:

It seems the idea of the company is flat packed from Poland and then shipped out..... reviews look good and it fits the gap perfectly of the room we're having as our bedroom.

'He bought his own furniture you know'.

So my brother is looking at the furniture in my mum's house - all has to go now that the house is sold - and what are the first two pieces he decides ano one would want? An old four drawer 'brown' chest of drawers and a 1960s dressing table - and you look on the Ercol website and what are they selling for many 00s? Did he try and sell them or get a charity to take them? No - he smashed them up and dumped the wood in the tip.

But he's lived in Aberdeen for 30yrs so I guess I have to make allowances for dull brain.
