Ok here's the story....I played saturday in our captains prize medal and shot a shocking gross 99 nett 82....
It doesnt matter what way i say it, it still sounds CAT!

Anyway i played with me Daa and another chap off the same 'cap as me (17 now )..
Where did he stand after 18?.....He shot a 3 over net 74....

Now, me, when i play i try to do everything the way it is thought should be done...I have my own little pre shot routine for all shots and also for my putting when im on the green...

This fellow has clubs with mud still in the grooves grass all over them woods with lumps gone out of them, lumps gone out of his irons a putter with a graphite shaft thats battered to death...

He has no routine at all for anything...Just stands up to the ball and hits it...

Im way longer than him on all shots (i wasnt trying to be) I was just playing the way i always try to play but he was hitting it so short that even when he went wayward he wasnt long enough to reach the cabbage....

This fellow wiped the course with me off the same handicap and must have wondered how the hell i was off 17....
If he wasnt rushing his putting so much i reckon he could have at least shot a nett 68.....

What gives?
Im trying my best to do the right thing but its just not falling into place at the moment....
Im starting to second guess myself now and wonder should i have left my swing well enough alone and just put up with my little fade and my deep divots....

Lately iv been having fun bending balls left to right and right to left with every iron from the 6 iron to PW at the driving range but on the course its a different story...

Does there come a point when everything starts to click for you?
Or am i being to impatient?

Sounds like you're thinking too much about everything, just relax and play.

A more important question is why was he playing off of 17?

:D

I can fully relate to the enjoyment part gents...When i played football our sunday morning match's couldnt come fast enough for me..

Then when i took up the golf 2 years ago its was the same way and still is....I cant wait to get out at the weekend to play...Rain hail or shine...

But i have to do the pre shot routines and that dont I?
If i become complacent at that point then im fighting an uphill battle straight from the start!

The pre shot routine is up to you. You don't have to have one.

Most people have one so that they feel 100% comfortable over the ball but it's not a rule set in stone that you need one.

When the 3rd round leaders are interviewed and they get asked what their tactics are for the final round, they always say "I'm just going to enjoy it and see how I get on" I used to think that was bo**ocks but recently have decided that is the only way to play.

Concentrate,do a preshot routine for sure, but, just be loose and enjoy it and I think you will relax and play better.

By the way - the other guy is a bandit!

I was thinking this Chris....Even my ol man thought that too...But i have shot a 64 and a 65 last season but i know in my heart that im not a bandit...Im actually one of the genuine ones that enters everything for the experience. :D

If the guy was 3 over, NETT, how is he a bandit? 3 over GROSS, then maybe! :D

Maybe you have just reached your level? Why worry just go out and enjoy yourself what will be will be. My preshot routine is standing over the ball praying not to shank it though

No....There is definitely more in me Chris...Of that im fairly certain...I think that the lads have a point in that im trying too hard.

I'm not really sure what you're worrying about. You had a bad round, sh!t happens, and your playing partner was 3 over his h'cap so didn't exactly rip it up. I had an absolute shocker a few weeks ago but I'm not gonna start questioning myself on the back of one bad round. Golf will throw up good rounds and bad ones and there ain't much you're gonna do about it.

But Hawkeye....Out of my last 12 rounds iv only shot inside my buffer once....The rest have been complete crap.

Im thinking that my problem now is that im looking too soon for some consistency..Instead of as the lads have said enjoying it.

Same boat as you with the exception of concentration. Starting to think 17 is my level :(

Funny thing is Parmo i know that i have the ability to get better but i just havent cracked it yet...

Funnily ol game innit? :D :D

Kid2 don't worry everyone has spells were it is not quite clicking into place. Sounds like the other guy has probably found his so called level and you're having an off few weeks. You can definitely keep improving, if you got out to practice your short game twice a week you will see massive improvements after a month or so. Keep at it and the routine is a must, why do all good players have a routine?

So everybody thinks a six and a half hour round is acceptable, I used to play with a guy who had THE longest pre shot routine then knobbed it twenty yards or shanked it or whatever. I honestly believe if more people just hit a golf ball instead of worrying if they had waggled the club the right amount of times or whatever the thing is they do, they would score or play much better.

I think when we get into these situations that is very easy to start thinking of the prize at the end of the day instead of keeping in the here and now. it's the old saying that rings true "One Shot at a Time".
