When should clubs time renewals?

Ours is 1st January, about the worst possible time. Think we should do renewals for 13 months for the next few years and, at the same time, make the payment deadline stricter. Probably wouldn't have a massive effect on cash flow and the psychological effect of having the year start on, say, 1st May would be beneficial.
