When did the word "gaming" come into the golfing lexicon?

I am not intrinsically against the quaint vocabulary and rituals that American golf has given us. Birdie and eagle of course are part of the game now and I have been known to give voice to the occasional "yoodamaan" when my partner sinks a long putt to win a hole. I have to confess that I have once or twice raised a hand for a high five and even done the knuckle touching thing. :o

But as I said on a previous thread "gaming" just grates with me. It just doesn't sound right. Don't specifically know why. I suppose because there are other perfectly good ways of saying the same thing properly, so can't see the point of it.

I played a lot with Americans, we even had a mini Ryder Cup where every 2 years 12 of us would go to the states and vice versa against 12 yanks.
The celebrations around birdies or good shots were....
Yanks- high fives, knuckle touching all round, whooping and hollering
Brits- "good shot! nice Birdie!" :smirk:

I know which one was more fun

Can't believe so many people have such strong opinions over it. One thinks people need to get out more and play some golf.

People tend to pick up on these words because they consider them to sound cool.

One that really annoys me for some reason is the use of the word "craic" by all and sundry.

I don't mind someone from the Emerald Isle using it but anybody else it just sounds contrived and is a prime example of the adoption of a word thought by the user to make them sound part of the happening scene.

i no wot u meen blud, fake innit, u get me? ;)

When they spell it "crack" it winds me up even more. Muppets.
