What's your warm-up strategy a) before a round? b) at the range?

Not really - something instilled in me from my very early days. It isn't actualyy that hard or as intense as I probably made it sound but really just a final chance to get the club moving freely and to see how you are hitting it. The trick is to play with what comes out so if I'm hitting it a bit left to right accept that is going to happen on the course and play with it. Its not the time to make swing changes but merely to be warmed up and loose and in a positive frame for the first shot. What happens then is just golf.

Interesting that loads of people say 'stretching first then hit balls'

I have a very good friend who is a personal trainer and works at my local gym. He says never ever stretch before getting the blood to the muscles first, it's a guaranteed way of pulling or tearing something.

He always made me do 5 - 10 mins gentle jogging before allowing me to stretch anything.

I know, i know, no one is going to jog around the car park or putting green first. But it might be better having 5 mins of gentle half swings with a wedge first??

I would love to see some of the coffin dodgers at our place running around the putting green!! lol

Haha.....same as that! Our membership would halve over night!

The practice putting green at our place looks like God's waiting room!

*The ageist views expressed by Faldo_Fan are in no way that of Golf Monthy or The Euthanasia Times* :D

You might have hit on the point of the post... :p :p

Well part of it... :D

Some interesting answers so far.. I've tried the cappuchino one and it just made me need a wee (or ten!).

Homer, no disrespect but I get the feeling your thinking more than doing. Clearly your love of the game is not in doubt but in 35 years of playing golf I’ve never felt any real benefit of longish routines before the off. I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work for me and perhaps a more relaxed approach could do you good.

I always want to leave the practice area in a good frame of mind and I stay there until that’s achieved. You just cant do that before a medal and if your not hitting it right you will carry that and negative thoughts to the tee.

I suggest you go to the next medal as early as you like but before you’re tee time just hit a few full pitches and a couple of chips and some putts. Practice swing as often as you like to be completely loose then fire away. :)

Tommo

You are missing my point. The session isn't a practice session but merely a warm up for the round ahead. I work on finding a good tempo not on swing thoughts. More importnatly if I'm spreading the balls about I won't try and change anything but work with the predominant shape of the day. The only thing I will rehearse is a 3 wood which is normally the club I use first tee shot of the day.

I'm pretty chilled thorughout the practice session and stop and chat with others around me. I'll hit a few chips and bunker shots and then a few putts and off I go.

The only thing I might do is hit a few 3 woods until I get one right to give me a positive to focus on over the first shot. Other than that its merely a warm up regime. I've tried not hitting any balls at all or only hitting maybe 20-30 max but I feel more unready (and strangely more nervous) than this way. It works for me. OK I can't do anything once the round is under way and I play like a complete hacker but at least standing on the first I feel as ready as I can be.

Not like you Homer to jump on a Mitch or Mono post ;)

And there's not much difference between 1-2 hours and your 75 mins. Just making an observation

My 75 minutes includes 10 or so getting my card and getting my gear together, putting practice before teeing off and a short stop for a comfort break so I reckon in total I'm probably only warming up for 45-50 minutes in total.

I was under the impression it was a forum. My opinion is 2 hours to warm up is WAY too long and I'd be too tired after hitting balls for that long. Wasn't trying to jump on anyones post just making an observation.

Start with pitching at the range....between 50 and 75 yards...generally trying to bounce then hit the boards. I generally dont hit a full shot due to my swing being chopped when I had lessons with County setup.Never hit anymore than 6 shots with the same club, and never anymore than 3 at the same target.

Our club has the shoddyiest net ever....the mat is wrecked and its basically in the ground so your taking risks of ruining clubs hitting balls from it. Ill have a few swings with two clubs...do a bit of stretching...get the ipod in and play the 30 points game (Kevin Craggs) until Im due to go!

Before a round

I just loosen up few shouldturns holding the position followed by a few one armed swings to get the feeling then bang first drive of the day

And i do exactly the same warm up at the range
