I hate the 'all the gear, no idea' brigade. And I never want to put pressure on myself that way.

So I'll wear the right clothes, but look bloody awfull doing it.

Inconspicuous anonimity is what I aim for.

And if you tuck your shirt in you'll go some way to achieving it
:D

I love to look smart on the course, but won't spend a fortune trying to get there.
I was in Marks & Spencers on Friday looking around their trouser selection. They had some superb choices in there, various pinstriped and plain coloured pairs for £19.99 and they would look great either on the course or in the office.
My favourite pair of trousers for golf are a lovely black pinstriped pair, came from Matalan of all places and cost £8.00. Just bought a lovely pair of grey pinstripe ones from Tesco, £12.99. Cushty.

;)

I go with quietly unremarkable. Smart dark trousers, collared shirt, and unless it's a really warm day, one of my smart v-neck jumpers I wear to work. Don't really look like a golfer at all, (which is just as well because I don't play like one!)

John Daly for me was his shape untill he lost that weight, do not wear them all the time, have the p!$$ taken out off me but lets have some fun, as long as it conforms to the dress code.

Black trousers or navy blue?
Black sweater or navy blue?
Black polo shirt or navy blue?

That's me in a nutshell. At this moment in time I have no desire to draw attention to myself on the course!!!

Milktray?

100% agree with this. I am tidy an presentable but that's it. I have never bought a golf brand name pair of trousers for example, and it's a long time since I bought anything but a club logoed jumper.

I would add to the list of ATGNI merchants, the matching everything, clubs are (let's say) Nike, so the shoes are nike, and the bag of course has to be Nike, most likely all of it this year's stuff - gimme a break.

So, reading between the lines, you're in the Padraig Harington camp are you? Just a hunch :D

You'd hate me then as I've got TM everything but I'm definitely not an ATGNI. I just happen to think matching bag and clubs (towel and umbrella) looks smart. It has nothing to do with emulating any particular player or trying to be a wannabee but is down to personal taste.

It does beg the question who do you classify as an ATGNI golfer doesn't it? I've got all Ping stuff (except for a wedge but that may change soon) and I carry them in a Ping bag but certainly don't consider myself as an ATGNI. I like to think my tumbling handicap shows I have at least some idea what I'm doing but like Homer, just happen to like having my Ping clubs in a Ping bag.

I also have a couple of pairs of Oscar Jacobsen trousers and a pair of Galvin Green trousers. I'm not a show off by any means and I don't like being centre of attention so drawing attention to myself is the last thing I want. I just got to the point last year when I started to resent spending more money on work trousers\suits than I do on golf so I thought I'd treat myself - don't see anything wrong with that.

So exactly what is an ATGNI golfer?

tbh with you, then yes. Unless you're playing off scratch or better when your game can justify it, anyone walking round with matching everything looks like a wally.

To show I'm not immune myself, least weeks midweek roll up, it's a beautiful night, but a nippy breeze is blowing and there's a bright sun out. I have my collar popped to block the breeze on my neck, and unusually for me was wearing a bb cap (also anti-cold measure). I nearly always take out sunglasses as I am a bit bright light sensitive, so had put them on top of my cap for later when we kicked off. You can picture the look?

I walked out of the pros shop and a junior is looking my way and smirking, I give him a double take but he's still looking. The penny drops, I look like a wannabe pro.

When people see you pulling up in your matching bag, brolley, towel and clubs, they are like that junior too. ;)

Advise is free, lessons extra :D

With respect, that is in my opinion absolute nonsense. I have a ping bag and unless you look inside you have no idea what clubs I have. Until a few months ago, I carried my ping clubs in a titleist bag, what's the difference?

usually blck/blue/grey trousers with a smart polo top. debenhams do some nice golf polos that are reasonably priced aswell.

I dont have the figure nor the game to be villegas or poulter unfortunately, but i always try to look smart with clean shoes.

Sorry but I think you are wrong. Anyone that has played with me or seen a video of my swing will know that whilst the goal is for single figures and an almost over zealous desire to get there, I have no real aspirations to make it further. I have always used matching bags for my clubs. It is a personal choice and having got a TM bag and clubs why would I then want to buy a Cally or Mizuno towel and umbrella.

TM clubs in a ping bag with cleveland wedges and a yonex 3 wood. Adidas shoes, various pairs of trousers, all cheap and a Ping pair for £1.80 from ebay which are my faves

Surely you'd be looking for the best bag, not one that matches your clubs like a pro?

Sun Mountain don't make clubs, so should we all pass up the best bags in the business (imo).

Why does your brolley have to match your bag? Or your towel?
