When i first got back into the game around 18 months ago the societies i was playing were all about stableford, great if your not taking it to serious but it seems to be a format that favours a high h/c. Since joining a club and playing more competitive golf and working on handicap cuts, im now really favouring strokeplay. The added pressure of working for that final number of strokes doesnt allow for a total blowout hole, which stableford and match play allow you to get away with.

Whats your favourite format and why?

Has to be singles stroke play , true indicator of how you are playing , love representing the club tho & thats matchplay , scrambles are fun but you get away with playing bad shots in that , so yeah definatly singles strokes ,

Strokeplay - proper golf no let offs, s/ford favours streaky high hcp's too much for my liking. Matchplay singles also good but second to strokeplay.

Having only just taken up the game, and joined a club mid Jan, I am a big fan of stableford. It allows you to relax in your game and not put any pressure on yourself to hole out at all costs if your holding the group up.

As it happens I havent actually held anyone up yet, even in stroke play, but there is less pressure.

Played my 2nd ever stableford comp on Saturday, went round in 97 for 31 points so not too bad. But, I had an incident on the 5th, I took my tee shot with the driver and then after hitting the ball, a group of horse riders came running out from the right without looking! I shouted FORE but still hit a rider smack on the cheek and broke her cheekbone! It wasnt pleasant, and although not my fault at all, it still had an effect on me and my game. My legs were like jelly for quite a few holes after, she had to go to hospital, hope she's ok.

Anyway, i digress, at my stage right now, i much prefer stableford. Although I am now a 26.3 handicap, I know i am improving and everyone I play with says I wont be at that level for long, which is nice to hear.

Maybe in 6 months or so I'll prefer stroke play????

we played greensomes yesturday in the clampham common shield, that was good fun and a nice change, Was lucky to be pair with someone off the same handicap as me so i/we had the same ammount of shots as we would normally get in stableford singles.

Stroke play.

Stableford is a hackers charter.

Match play is fun, but if you win 7 and 6, and walk in, then it's like half a round of golf. No good if it's your only weekend game.

The club has yes, but shouldnt really be an issue and it was their fault, so shouldnt really affect ours.

We left a few shots out there and still rocked in with 38 points. a few silly missed putts from me and my partner should have seen 41/42pts

A dig at me!? why?

Not sure how they could even try for a case, their group admitted they were going too fast and didnt stop to look. Cant see anyone thinking they would have a case there...

sorry mate was meant to say wasnt (not to self proof rear posts first), i agree its a total no fault thing, but they always try and chase for the what if's.

LOL, ah ok, it now reads differently!! I felt bad enough as it was, it's not something I want to happen again. I like to see the best in people and would hope that they wouldnt try anything on. They didnt ask for details, they acknowledged it was their fault and said they were off to the hospital. Hopefully it will make other riders take more care in future. Horse riders are not supposed to go over a trot on our course apparently, and these guys were practically galloping, trying it on!

I'd say singles strokeplay, but I'm not averse to Stablefords like some others around my handicap are. Not because of blow out holes, but purely because I like being able to forget a hole rather than walk back down the fairway to play another ball if I can't find it after a shot that didn't look like it needed a provisional.

Also love matchplay, but nothing like seeing a measure of your performance against the course at the end of a round for self satisfaction, rather than against someone else.

Strokeplay for me, all I care about is my gross score. Even when I'm playing s'ford my only concern is my gross score. That for me is what golf is about, taking as few shots as possible.
