I would be asking him what his golfing ambitions were. If he was aiming high, I would explain the deficiencies in his game and how much time and effort would be needed to make the big leap forward. If he was just looking to gradually improve his scores without setting the world on fire, I would suggest a couple of simple changes and let him get on with it.
