Was watching the French Open yesterday, a really good exhibition of golf, and excellent TV coverage of the play (take note American TV producers).

Siem playing the 18th, he'd played his 2nd from a bunker and landed just in the light rough right of the fairway. The camera panned to him as he was preparing for his 3rd and he was holding his ball before placing it back on the ground next to a marker. No one on the coverage mentioned it so I was wondering what rule he'd used to pick his ball up?

Any ideas?

Not in the rough!

Then surely he would have dropped the ball to bring it back into play.

As I clearly stated I DID NOT SEE THIS so was adding this as a potential situation (and merely as the only odd situation that anyone mentioned to me). I do not know, nor vouch to know, what happened contextually, circumstantially nor factually.

Highlights didn't show anything - Siem played out of the bunker and was about 4 feet in from the right semi in the fairway though!!!???

Not sure what OP refers to??

I saw him replacing his ball to play his shot. I assumed it was preferred lies but i didnt remember seeing anybody else doing it so was a bit confused. I didnt see his ball land in rough from the bunker shot so that rules out preferred lies.

Did one of his playing partners ask him to Mark it?....may have been interefering with his line......he is allowed to Mark it, but not clean it in this circumstance. he is then allowed to place it back.......

I seem to recall that the commentators said early in the day that it was preferred lies due to the thunderstorms.

Only guessing [telly was on but I wasn't taking much notice] IF you've had a couple of drops and ball rolls nearer the hole do you not place ball where referee judges it too have dropped....

Anyhow, fairly certain on a previous day I saw him using his extended length putter as a measure for relief rather than his driver... Might be within the rules but as far as I am concerned its against the spirit ...
