This is a serious thread. If you wish to call me names or hurl abuse, please do so on another thread.

What muscles groups are most important for golf, and how best to develop them? Before your answer, please consider the following professional golfers and tell me what they have in common.

Tiger Woods (gym man)
Luke Donald (skinny)
Lee Westwood (not skinny)
Colin Montgomerie (anti-skinny)
Scott Stallings (won yesterday)
Bob Estes (runner-up yesterday)
Rory McIlroy (supple)
Alvaro Quiros (powerhouse)
Tom Watson (old)
Rickie Fowler (young)
K.J. Choi (stocky)
Bubba Watson (lanky)

Any common physical features?

Are you asking because you don't know? Or are you asking because you do know and want to see how wrong people are? I'm confused.

I don't know. But I am a little doubtful about the recommendations that "core" muscles are critical, given the differing physical attributes of the golfers in the above list.

Eh? How do you know that all the above golfers don't all have good core muscle strength just by looking at their physical stature?

Core strength is beneficial to almost every sport you can play.

I dont know what the link is.
I dont think muscles are that important, however a good core, strong back and strong legs are important.
I dont think you can be muscle bound, unless you can be flexible at the same time.
Even though Tom Watson is old,i would have classed him as experienced.
Tiger went through a stage of bulking up and it helped him considerably, until the word "steroid" was used, then he got injured and came back a bit flabby.
Monty has never been Musclely, however i think he may have continued his career at the top longer if he was fitter.
Then you look at donald,a relative lightweight, but superb timing and technique.
And to me thats what they all have, timing and technique.

I'd argue that golf isn't really about muscles in the traditional sense that would apply to other sports. It can help generate extra power but really you need a solid core this helps keep your swing on plane and good flexibility to help with your turn. The way I see it the golf swing is like a coiled spring and the flexibility and core muscles help you maximise the power you generate from that spring.

There is also a problem with you initial post though. You make it as though all of those golfers hit a similar distance. They don't. Some make up for less yards with accuracy and a stellar short game. Most of the really big hitters are tall and wiry like Quiros and Bubba Watson. Those that aren't like that long drive bloke Jamie Sadowlowski? are immensely flexible and generate more turn

Any chance of reviewing Tom Watsons sub status?

I'm getting a complex, and Leftie must be very upset as well

and I still think the bottom line is natural hand/eye coordination. :D

done the play every sport with several pints and fags thing,
done the swim thing,
done the gym thing,
now I do the golf thing

only do one at time - otherwise it's too confusing

Core muscles for Golf?

A strong core and obliques (those are the muscles that your love handles covers, for want of a better description), strong wrists, and strong shoulders.

Obviously you don't need to be built like Arnie to hit the ball a good distance, but it can help, as long as you have good flexibility and timing.

A strong core combined with flexibility and timing will allow you to wind up like a spring and will let you un coil faster for further distance.

Cheers
Dave
