Okay, the season is over, the nights are drawing in and cabin fever is starting to break out. As a result I've been trawling through some other golf forums, just to see how they compare to the GM Forum.

I have to say, this is probably the most balanced forum that I've come across out there. Having been on another forum before joining here, I felt more at home when I settled into this one. Some get too technical at times, other just don't seem to move along at any pace at all and some are just plain boring. There are certainly more volatile forums out there that would make some of our more 'interesting' episodes seem like normal run of the mill occurences.

So without naming or shaming other sites, what has drawn you to the Golf Monthly Forum and what has made you stick around ?

:D

I googled golf forum, and this one won!

I stick around because I like the atmosphere, including the light banter and the fact that how good you are seems less important than contribution.

Also, as I've met people and played in different things, and been to events, and even "won" some freebies, I'm not moving. :)

I am new to playing the game, but have got a lot of enthusiasm for it and the next step was looking at what tips I could pick up from like-minded individuals online.

Quick Google search and hey presto.

Pretty much as Dave. Though I did start out with another golf periodicals forum. But it just wasn't user friendly, and there was next to no activity on it. I also wanted a UK based forum.

But more importantly is what has kept me here.

Despite recent calls for a more modern look to the forum. I actually find it easy to use and follow. Golfmagic just has too many sections for example. Next is just how funny it can get on here sometimes. It's got a lot busier since I joined, so it's nice to see how the site has evolved, and how folks games have evolved over that time.

The forum meets have always been interesting, and it's great to meet my 'virtual friends'.

Last but not least. The support that GM and IPC give to the forum. I'm lucky enough to have been involved in the 'experiment' at Crowborough, the reader test panel, and had a great couple of days golf at the Belfry. Though I'm still waiting for the Mizuno day with Luke!! Aside from that forumers often get first dibs on things like the recent Wilson day with Paddy.

It's all these reasons that keep me here, even though I may post a lot less than I used to, I'm still loitering.

I haven't checked out too many other forums, and the ones I had were American, so being in the UK, a UK based forum is much nicer.

The other big factor, was that everyone here seemed pretty friendly, normal and realistic.
On the other forums I checked out, you were a short hitter, if you 'only' hit it 290 yards off the tee and had a driver with more than about 6 degrees of loft and an XXXX flex shaft!

I really needed an answer to a situation that had occured on the course one day so looked up a couple of forums, posted the question and the replies I received on here were very encouraging and to the exact point so I now enjoy reading and responding on this forum most days of the week.

Very enjoyable :) :) :)

Have'nt tried any other forums. Used to go to the main GM site and got into the forum from there. Was stuck at home a lot this year for health reasons so got into the forum as I was missing the golf banter at my club. What do I like about it? In no particular order

Easy to use
Well informed and lively discussion
Some real experts whose breadth and depth of knowledge is amazing
People are really friendly and good humoured
Great characters
Real sense of community with people sharing good and bad experiences and getting encouragement and support
Great humour
Support from GM with offers, contributions from staff etc. (Wilson day was great example)

Found it through the main GM site. Joined in a thread and never looked back.
Good bits are the banter, arranging games and the knowledge available. It can get a bit dull from time to time but it always picks up again. And I don't much care for the times when a full scale fight almost breaks out.

ps, I didn't know there were any other forums...?

I was on another golf forum and it was WAY to slow. I tryed to get the publishers make more of it in there mag to see if we could make it more active and did not get a responce. I then asked if anyone knew of another active golf forum and Shark told me about this one.

I bought the magazine and liked it, saw there was a forum and thought I'd give it a look and here I am. Coincidently it was the magazine which had a piece on Homer and his 12 billionth post and I thought I'd check it out! :)

When my dad introduced me to golf back in the 60's he used to read the GM then.........IIRC it cost about 2/6d.

When I finally returned to the game (as a regular, a few seasons ago) I started buying it again and noticed the Forum. Dont post very often but always read them.

I honestly cant remember, but i just love this forum, all the guys that ive met have been top blokes and very friendly. The two forum meets i have been on so far have been extremely well organised and great value. The tips and ideas are good, the banter is great, why would i look anywhere else.

i signed up briefly some while ago but have only come back on line recently after seeing forum golf days featured in the Mag. It seems like a good way to get some interesting golf outings.
I am looking forward to spring next year when I can hopefully join some of the days. I have checked out some vids on youtube putting swings to Aka's. Am I wise to join this often off the wall gathering of characters for a day's golf? :p
