I have been getting frustrated going round in anything from 102 to 110 each time, feels like a big step shooting 98 on saturday, the main difference I think was some putting practice in the dining room, and the tips for flop type shots on here last week of having the ball forward.

I've always had in my mind to have the ball back in the stance to get height on it - and have been really struggling with short, going over bunkers type shots.
This week I put the ball forward, didn't quit on it and saw good results from the 4 or 5 times, rather than smacking it right through the green or shifting it 3 inch.

Onwards & upwards to my targets this year of a low twenties hcp & beating two of the lads I play with (they're off 15 & 18). Can't wait to play again - damn these work / family / budget constraints!

Thanks!

Good stuff mate , theres loads of good tips on here (some poor ones too ;)) its just sorting through which are applicable to you and your game. Then getting out there and having a go to see if it works.

I know exactly how you feel. Well done on breaking 100 again and here's to many more scores in the 90's and hopefully 80's this year. I agree that practice makes a world of difference. I've been too scared to try flop shots but given your success I will give them a go when I practice today.

No point being scared of any type of shot Tiger. Thats what practice time should be used for , to develop a range of shots youre going to be comfortable playing on the course.

Maybe scared wasn't quite the right word, but as I've been struggling with my consistency on chips and pitches, I just felt I'd be better investing my time on them rather than more advanced techniques.

However, NF has given me the belief that I could add these to my armoury, which would help enormously as I'm actually quite good at landing the ball near the pin, it just tends to run on some distance after that point :D!

Thanks for the thread link as well!

I have previously spent more time practising/using chip & runs, which I am quite confident with (most useful tip for these was keep the heel of the club just off the ground) - even holed one on saturday  and am definitely in positions where this (chip& run) shot is required more.

The flop feels like a big progression for me! And might increase in value as greens get harder/faster?!

Well done, i was exactly the same and now get mid nineties and the other week fluked an 89.It has happened over the past month or 2 even in the hard ground. Like you it's my chipping etc thats helped as my putting is still poor.

Oh my god. Just been over to the heath, thought I'd give flopping a try. Followed the advice from BD's thread, didn't thin one. The harder I hit it the higher it went. Is my distance control any good, not on your nelly but direction was so, with some more practice, this could make an appearance in competition later in the summer.

Thanks for spurring me on

where do you play in Sheffield? I have lived in sheffield for 5 years now and saturday was only the 2nd course I have played (Tinsley, having previously played Beauchief? I think its called) am going to try and play as many of the courses as possible this year.

well done on your score though, we are pretty much going for the same goals :)

joined the 'golfit' council scheme - as i was paying £40 a month to not use a gym in town, I thought I might as well pay £45 a month to not use a different gym but get 4 golf courses thrown in!
So play Birley (virtually across the road from our house), Tinsley Beauchief & Tapton (Chesterfield) as much as i get chance, also rother valley when can get a decent offer on internet booking tee times, played each of dore & totley, sitwell (rotherham), bondhay, & college pines once, also birch hall a few times!
Next on my list to play is renishaw as i've driven through it so many times!

I always look on the flop like a bunker shot and open the blade up and aim left and commit to the shot. The lie has to be decent though and it does take some practice to get some control for distance. Always a useful tool to have though
