None. BBQ's are rubbish. The food tastes second rate and men embarrass themselves throughout the proceedings.

The only time we cook outside is when we are not near a kitchen.

Charcoal all the way....whilst Gas is quick and easy, charcoal just tastes better.....although why does it always get really hot just after you finish cooking?

I voted for charcoal as that is real barbecuing and the taste is far better. That said, I have and use a gas one for the ease and simplicity. In the summer it becomes an everyday cooking tool and I pop out to cook on the patio quite often. I would not do that if I had to go through the faff of getting the coals warm etc on a proper barbecue

Same as this. In the summer and sometimes even in winter it gets used a fair bit. Easier to cook a bit of steak on the grill then in the kitchen and have the smell lingering.

Would prefer a charcoal one but have a gas one for ease

Has a grill that gives it a chargrilled taste

BBQ's are great though - mainly impromptu on a sat or Sunday evening

I'm banned from barbecues after suffering second degree burns to my leg last year. I ended up in A&E and then spent the best part of six months attending the local nurse every other day to have the dressings changed. Played havoc with my golf too.

Hear! hear!!

What is this obsession with cooking and eating outdoors.

Barbecues and Texas Scrambles; ban 'em both I say.

Not joking in this house. Phil.

I cook everyday and thoroughly enjoy doing so, just cannot see the attraction of barbecues or picnics for that matter. My dear old Dad was the same, my brother once invited him to a barbecue, the Old Boy grumpily collected his food and immediately retired indoors with his plate.

Did buy one when the kids were young twenty odd years ago and used it twice, the rhodedendron has long since swallowed it up.

I see there are lots of votes for charcoal, for me you cannot know how wrong you are.

The only real BBQ is gas so convenient it can be used every day in the summer tastes as good if not better than charcoal as the cooking can be controlled properly.

The Aussies are big on BBQ's and all they use is gas. The free gas BBQ's in the parks in the city's are awesome, roll up in the park with some sausages etc and have a BBQ, sadly I think if this idea was done in the UK someone would decide to go to the toilet on them.....

Do you go abroad much ?

I have never seen anything like that about a BBQ before ?

Being a South African qualifies me pretty damn well to give the definitive answer here.

Charcoal is used for your normal everyday meats - Steak, Boerewors, Lamb Chops, Chicken Pieces, Fish, Bacon Strips etc.
Briquettes are only for Roasting in a Weber. Whole roast chicken and Beef/Lamb joints are awesome doen this way.
Gas - What you cook on when camping or indoors.

PS - Hamburgers and shocking little sausages do not constitute a proper braai!

Never been a fan of bbqs only two that were good were a whole pig on a spit roast and when I was in South Africa last year was invited to a braai by some locals who done a lamb on a spit roast just at the end they put marinade on,delicious, and they brought out a giant glass of lager for the man that done the braai.

Ah! but then you had only heard nice things about Texas Scrambles.

As for going abroad much; no not really, only visited twelve countries in last ten years. Generally managed to eat indoors.

when i lived in Cyprus we were always eating outside - on the balcony or on the beach or in rest gardens. It was great.

Well Texas Scrambles are just fun relaxing enjoyable comps for me

BBQ's come under having a bit of fun outside. Of course the food tastes better cooked properly, but when the weather is warm and sunny you can't beat nicely cremated meat.

Plus the important stuff - crisp cold cider or a nice cold pint of Peroni or San Miguel :p
