I received an email from my club today announcing that, amongst other things, the intention is to run as many comps as possible as qualifiers this winter rather than non-qualifiers or reductions only.

A crazy decision imo, especially if we end up having another wet winter like last year. A quick text exchange with my teaching pro has confirmed he agrees with me.

So, what are other clubs intending to do? Over to you...

Don't see the issue myself. Wouldn't want to play at a club where half the season was wiped out simply because someone determines that between date X and Y that comps will be non qualifying, just because of a predisposed notion of what the weather/course conditions might be like.

Hold as many comps as you can with the intention of them being qualifiers and if the conditions are bad enough then the comp will automatically become R.O.

last comp is this Saturday then nothing till April. Not sure i would want to be playing Qual comps during some of the weather we get in the north of Scotland

We go onto Winter Tees around beginning of Nov, Teeing up on fairways is brought in at same time, we run an indiv stab and 4BBB alternating every weekend until April, comps are non-qualifiers, winner/s have handicap reduced by 15%, runner/s up by 10%, all handicaps reinstated back on 01 Apr next year.

Two extracts from the CONGU manual:

Every golf club or handicapping authority will, whenever possible run stroke play competitions as qualifying competitions, calculate a Competition Scratch Score and make all handicap adjustments strictly in accordance with the system.

The adoption of preferred lies, can allow Qualifying Competitions to be conducted under acceptable playing conditions. Clubs should, whenever practicable, play competitions as Qualifying Competitions during the preferred lie period.Reference should be made to Decisions 1(a) and 1(b) that have been formulated to promote and encourage Qualifying Competitions in the preferred lie period.

And - clubs cannot run Reduction Only competitions.

Last qualifying comp at the beginning of November, then nothing until middle of March. We do have a winter ecclectic series and the weekly men round goes on, but they play non-qualifying during that time. The ladies pause their weekly comp from Nov to March. Our course generally gets very quiet over the winter months. It is well drained, though, so unless there is snow, it normally stays quite playable. Tees are changed to mats, temporary greens only come into play when there is frost. I kind of enjoy those dressed like the Marshmallow Man rounds during winter when no one else is around. Gives me a grim satisfaction :swing:

Last qualifier this Saturday then that's it till April . Ironically the course is looking as good as it has all year and aesthetically it's a picture. I love autumn golf and hate the fact that everything closes down on a certain date and that there is no fluidity according to conditions and weather. Back in Essex my previous club played qualifiers all year round with no problem. When you ask the powers that be the answer is "because we've always done it that way"

Two more normal season qualifiers for us in the coming 10 days. Thereafter only monthly stableford qualifiers through until March. They tend to be on Saturdays when the popular winter 4 ball season is in full swing so they don't get too many entrants.

We're on fairway mats from just pre-Xmas until end of February so most folks tend to just chill out and enjoy the pressure free nature of winter golf. Apart from the top players who are playing East Lothian winter league scratch foursomes on a Sunday morning which I believe is taken very seriously.

Here in the Soft South we have qualifiers throughout the year, although we may lose a few to bad weather during the Winter months. Our course has 'frost holes' which shorten the course enough to render comps non-qualifying if the course gets frozen. Also comps may become R/O's if the conditions are really bad.

Whites go in at the end of October until April so thats qualifiers done with. Dont know why its always been that way..Probably so low handicappers dont lose their exalted status or to stop higher handicappers to get even higher..

We play off different tees in the winter and all comps are non-qualifiers, I assume because the course off the winter tees isn't rated? Can you rate a course from winter tees for SSS?

We have comps all the way through but just non-qualifying. They are extending the qualifiers slightly this year which is a good thing, more frustrating is that when they start in March/April at ours we have 1 or 2 then none for about 3 weeks with an amateur comp that closes the course and captains drive ins etc.

Doesn't really bother me tbh, nice to pick and choose the day you play at the weekend and play bounce games for a couple of quid.

It was lift clean and cheat through the green last Saturday, will be on winter tees (not a measured course) from when the clocks go back. Will be that way until end of March when we go back on full course and may go to closely mown only and restart qualifiers.

Monthly medal (Q) every last weekend of the month, all year round. Once the dirtier weather is here the white markers may only come out for medals, but thats the only change.

We always stopped qualifiers end of November but a couple of years ago they decided to try and play them all through the winter.
I think they managed 3 due to poor weather and scrapped it.
So they began the winter league. Up to 20 Stableford cards handed in between 1st November and 31st March, from the yellows, best 5 to count.
Keeps the competitive juices flowing without going up .1 every week....
