• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

What in your opinion is the most useless piece of golf equipment ?

Rangefinders!

How many of us know accurately how far we CONSISTENTLY hit any club.

Be honest now!

Being able to hit a particular yardage with a particular club has 4/5ths of bugger all to do with wanting to know how far you have to hit.
Do you want to know how far the pin/green/ditch is from you? Then you work out how far it is, by eye, by course guides or by GPS. Whether you can hit anything that far/accurately is completely irrelevent.

Am really struggling with Rangefinders. How many Pro's did you see aiming lasers @ flags at Sawgrass? Horrible visions of a future not so far from now of people marching round with Rangefinders holding up play, duffing it, repeat etc....

Just can't see how they can make you a better player unless you're visually impaired???

Now ball finding sunglasses, there's a product that has obvious practical value, off to get me some!!

the pros have the course and everything on it mapped, double mapped and on top of that they have practiced the shots, the bunkers over and over........for every comp.

I have excellent vision, but I can't see what's hidden from view and I don't want to waste everyones time walking up to find out. I am also unable to judge yardages as accurately as I can carry the ball.

They're not allowed to use them in competitions but I'll guarantee there were a few to be seen during the practice days!

Holding up play is hitting what you think is the distance, missing it and having to play another shot.

All the pros caddies have rangefinders that they use the day/week before and write all the distances down...

!!

Bit confusing!.

Your first point about pro's at Sawgrass, they use them in their practice rounds to measure yardages then get their caddies to fill out those massive notepads you see them holding, so there is no need in tournament play and they have a Caddie for that very purpose...

As for your 2nd point that already happens at every course you go to,

That would be because they're not allowed in competition on the Tour, but during practice rounds they use them and they do have a caddy with them.

I use one and reckon it knocked at least 1.5 off my handicap after I got it.

Thanks for pointing out ref Tour rules :o

They still seem pointless to me, especially to an amatuer with decent vision.

Any experiences of Ball Finding Sunglasses appreciated too...

Precisely, Rangefinders are totally irrelevant.

Knowing the distance to an objective is totally useless if you don't know which club you need to achieve that and as for those players who faff around with their GPS/Rangefinder when they are less than 100 yards from the target!!!.

The yardage is merely the starting point for gauging the shot to hit. Your vision may be 20/20 but I guarantee that you aren't as accurate as my laser.

So......using my laser the flag is exactly 100 yds away and 5 yds behind the flag is a pond. If 105 yds is my flat out wedge then I know to take a bit off and alls well.
Using your perfect vision, you guess that the flag is 105 yards away (very accurate guess over 100yds) that means you can hit flat out wedge knowing you'll be safe??? Splosh - oops.

The first thing you need to know about a shot, except possibly the lie, is how far you have to hit the ball. How do you do it? Pacing? guess work? Looking at markers?
Why?
You can't accurately hit a club that far so you may as well dump 13 clubs in the lake and just use a putter instead....
I use my laser, it takes around 5 seconds, to find out how far I need to hit the ball. I can then choose a club that I think I can hit that far...wbether I do or not is irrelevent to the use of gps/laser
Have fun taking 10 putts on a par 4........
