What does the rule book say about this ??

Had a game with my mate today, on the 3rd he went into a greenside bunker. First 2 attempts he didn't get out, on the third he caught the lip, the ball looped up and back and landed on his shoulder against his neck, and stayed there. We were playing matchplay so he conceded the hole but whats the ruling in strokeplay?

2 shot penalty for the ball hitting the player. The ball would need to be replaced from where he took the last shot from and seeing as you're in a hazard I think you would have to re-create the lie as to how it was before playing it.
I'm probably wrong but I ain't looking up 'decisions on the rules of golf' at this time of night!

Its now a one shot penalty for a ball hitting a player in a bunker, it did however used to be two shots.
