Hi all,

Just taking up the game seriously and have joined my local club, Robin Hood in Solihull. There is an organised "Fiddle" on a Wed and Friday where I can just turn up and get put into a group to play.
I've played 3 times on the course (alone) and scored 106, 110 + 104.

My questions are, what do you regular "fiddle" players expect from a newbie?
Should I get my scores down first before turning up?
Obviously, I've no handicap so what am I supposed to start on?
Is it usual to have any "wagers" on a hole/round?

Thanks for any advice.

Paul

Tell them you dont have a handicap yet, ask if you can join and get them to mark your cards for you for your handicap (so your first 3 rounds will be used for that), in that time you'll get to know the guys in the group and how it works each time then join in fully with your new handicap

good luck

That’s exactly what I did to get my first handicap. My best round at the time was 104, so don’t worry about that. It’s also a great way to get to know people at the club.

Turn up, keep up and shut up !!

Seriously, as Fundy has said tell them you are a newbie, and could they mark your card for h/c, they may or may not suggest an informal h/c for you if you want to play in any cash swindles, just don't go taking all the money on your first outing :one:

Welcome to the forum.

On the point about getting a first handicap. I would advise players new to the game not to be in too much of a rush to get a first handicap. Once your first handicap has been set the only way to get it down is by Qualifying Scores ie playing in a competition or Supplementary Scores and the downs might not be as big as you expect.

If your initial handicap is over 28 (which it looks as if it will be) you may well find that it prevents you from playing some competitions.

Not shoot 92!!!

That's exactly what i did of an unofficial 28hcp, the extra focus and the fact i was playing with a 2hcp and 5hcp brought out the best in me; all was in good jest however they even bought me a beer to drink whilst divvying up my monies.

None of your playing partners will mind the standard of your play as long as you show proper etiquette, be friendly and don’t take an age to hit each shot. Just go out and enjoy my man.

Is it not something like maximum handicap allowance is 28?
So say a 34 handicapper would just play off 28.
Have fun btw, you’ll it love once you get over the 1st tee nerves 😉

Yes indeed. Keep up, and don’t be afraid to ask about a rule/etiquette if you not sure.
Have fun! Score will look after itself.

It is up to each club how they set the maximum handicap allowance for any comp. Where I play we do not allow players with a handicap over 28.4 to play in pairs comps and the maximum handicap is as stated for entry in to our Open events and knockout competitions.

CONGU and England Golf do not like players not receiving their full handicap allowance in competitions.

if I was off 28.5 Id rather be allowed to play and be off 28 than not be allowed to play

Expect people like being excluded less than England Golf dont like them getting full handicap

Keep up but most of all to enjoy it. You're there to have fun and to relax in your leisure time, not to feel uncomfortable amongst a load of blokes who have been doing it a while.

Enjoy and welcome to the forum.

Welcome along. Turn up, enjoy it and you'll soon fit in. Whether you get your cards done early or they let you play off an unofficial handicap for a while is up to you and them to discuss. Swindles, fiddles or whatever these roll ups are called are sociable golf and a great way to meet a lot of members very quickly

Top club Robin Hood nice choice, play it cool then fleece them for every penny down the line :-)

move to new club nobody likes a winner!!!
